It hadn't been that long since he and Dorian had gone on a date to the zoo. He was pretty sure that his boyfriend would be wondering why they were back so soon but he also knew the smile on his own face and the way he giddily pulled Dorian through the entrance was most likely enough to make the older man have no problem with returning.
Plus there were signs all over announcing that today was a special display day. They'd be letting some of the animals out - obviously with a trained professional - and that meant the possibility of being able to pet one and as they had discovered on their date, this zoo had red pandas. So it was no surprise that Joan was very interested in the possibility of petting a red panda.
This technically wasn't a date - though it could have been; Joan was still working on figuring out what counted as a date and what didn't - but then again he never really went anywhere without Dorian anymore. It was partially because Dorian made him feel like less of a walking bomb and partially because he was certain he was falling in love.
Radiation happily bounced off him as he gently but firmly pulled Dorian by his hand toward where he knew the red pandas were - of course he'd memorized where their exhibit was; he wasn't some amateur red panda fan after all. His smile only grew when he noticed that there was indeed a zookeeper by the exhibit.
"Dorian, look!" he said, casting his smile over his shoulder at his boyfriend. For all he knew Dorian could have seen the zookeeper before he had but he had a feeling the older man's attention had been most, if not entirely, on him. It was almost as if he could sense Dorian's attention on him.
"Hi!" he greeted when they neared the zookeeper and his cheeks flushed when he noticed he'd probably spoken with too much excitement. | ... The fluff in front of him padded around his cage. Quill couldn't help but watch with something close to joy as it met with its mate and then tumbled around with each other. Soon enough, it would be time to show off these magnificent creatures and with the help of the other keeper, they'd be showing these two red panda's off to a group of people. Certain ones had been cleared for showing since the weather had been getting warmer throughout the day.
Setting up for the event was the tedious part that he hated because it involved the questions. The constant reminders that he would shove out like a recording.
"It's in thirty minutes."
"The meet and greet starts at three. Only fifteen guests permitted at a time."
"No, you can't touch them unless you are over eighteen."
The screaming kids that would walk away crying when the event was over or were unable to touch the animals was the worst. His ears always resonated with the ringing afterwards, but the best part about the event was getting to commune with the animals that he dearly loved and made sure were well taken care of. If they had issues or something seemed off, he could always get them to calm down enough for the meet and greets. The animals were always willing to let him make them feel like they had a choice in how long to show for.
"Alrighty Safari. Let's do this. I'll be back soon Bonnie and Clyde. Time for friends." He whispered out to them as they both looked at him and carried on to their business.
Quill walked out to the demonstration area and stood at the sign changing it as the five minutes were upon them and no sooner did the sign change from the previous time to 'Showing Now', a very excitable voice called out to him. He turned to the guy and lifted an eyebrow. A little too friendly, it made him wonder if somehow he knew the guy.
"Hi. Sorry, the showing is about to start. Can I help you find something or are you here for the showing?" He questioned the pair as a few more people started to show up as well. With a sigh and pinching the bridge of his nose, he waited. "Passes?"

The weeks spent inseparably intertwined, body and soul, were obvious with every passing day. Dorian and Joan were forming intimate roots, settling into an immovable foundation of their relationship. Dorian felt he knew Joan's mind better than he knew his own, and there were countless times, more frequently as time wore on, when Dorian had the glaring suspicion that Joan somehow knew what he was thinking or feeling before Dorian did himself.
Originally, Joan had been flummoxed, disbelieving and unable to accept just how deeply devoted and obsessed with him Dorian was. That was changing, though. Like just then. When any would-be anxiety at pulling Dorian along to the zoo so soon after their last visit was much milder than it once would've been.
Joan knew just how tightly Dorian was welded around his finger, and when he accepted that, or reveled in it, or used it wickedly, it made Dorian's skin feverish with content.
"Oh, I get it," Dorian said in a sigh of comprehension when the signs finally processed. And the Warlock smiled, small and tenderly, drawing the excess radiation that Joan's bright mood put out as easily - and pivotally - as he breathed. His lover pulled him through the crowd to a demonstration that was about to happen, and gushed a greeting to the zookeeper there.
Dorian's smile, fond and thoughtfully directed at Joan a moment ago, turned sour and sickly sweet. The sudden urge to backhand the zookeeper for his nerve to be impolite to Joan almost overwhelmed him. Dorian draped one arm defensively and possessively over Joan's shoulders, pulling the boy to his side, the smile becoming even more jarring to behold. "Here," he said lazily, flashing the top-of-the-line passes to the zoo that money could buy, which Dorian had secured for him and Joan the second after their first visit there.
Dorian guided Joan a few steps aside, and said, casually, but very intentionally loud enough for the tart zookeeper to hear, "Suppose he must handle animals better than people, otherwise he'd be missing a limb by now. Or dead." Dorian smirked at the last two words, not allowing Joan to stray a centimeter from his side.
(OOC: Dorian dislikes one-hundred percent of people at first meeting them except Joan. Don't take it personally D: he'll probably warm up to Quill.) | ... to be talkin' to you: b e l l a d o n a. should've taken a break, not an oxford comma. take what i want when i wanna. and i want ya ... Joan could feel the moment Dorian realized why they were here. He wasn't sure how but he did, grinning sheepishly up at his boyfriend. His attention returned to the zookeeper and he blanked at the mention of passes. He didn't recall grabbing them himself. The radiation turned sharp with anxiety. He'd forgotten the passes. That meant the outing was ruined. They couldn't watch the show without the passes. That meant he'd dragged Dorian out here for no reason and wasted his time. It would be all his fault--
He was brought out of his anxiety when he felt an arm go around him and was suddenly much closer to Dorian's side than he had been before. He resisted the urge to let out a breath of relief when he saw that Dorian had the passes. He noticed Dorian's tone very quickly, quicker than he could register that he could feel Dorian's frustration in regards to the zookeeper. He may not have had Ariel's ability but he was still trained to notice things like body language. That training wasn't easily forgotten, even when he wasn't on a mission.
Joan opened his mouth to say something but then he was being guided away by Dorian. He huffed, unsure how he should feel. Then came Dorian's comment. Joan wasn't stupid and Dorian knew that. He could easily tell that his boyfriend wanted the zookeeper to hear him.
He smacked his hand against Dorian's stomach, purposefully rough compared to how he'd usually do it lightly, and gave him a chastising frown.
"Don't be such a Karen," he scolded, voice purposefully the same as Dorian's had been to be overheard. In his mind the zookeeper was just doing his job, possibly had a long day, and he had to deal with the public all day most likely. He didn't blame him for being tired or antisocial.
"He's doing his job," he added and then his tone dipped into a warning edge he'd learned from Dorian, "Play nice." He shook his head, muttering words in Spanish. | ... Aggravation was evident in his voice as he realized that he was definitely not ready for any human contact. It was the same day after day. The paying customers came in expecting to see the animals perform to what they wanted and got bummed out when the animals didn't want to show for them or did nothing but sleep. It was a tiring situation for both human and animal alike, but for Quill it was the thrill behind the scenes that really did it in for him. Interaction with the animals is what made it more memorable for the people that had already started lining up and Bonnie and Clyde hadn't been part of the showing for at least three weeks.
The excitable guy in front of him had his expression turn dismal in a moment at the mention of passes. Quill sighed as the man he was with, a little older, he noted, handed him the passes that he collected into his hands and then pulled out a punch stamp. Stars replaced the paper and he handed the passes back to the two men in front of him.
"Enjoy the show. We're starting in five minutes." Quill droned out the usual line one after another as each set of customers, err zoo-goers, until the limit had been reached and with the last little kid beaming with joy went further into the exhibit, stopping at the sign, he joined the group. As he passed the first two men again, he took note to glare at the rude guy that had acted as though he was tough shit. His lips suddenly softened though remembering how the excitable young man had retorted a sly insult to his significant other, he assumed and nodded to Joan.
"Welcome everyone to the red panda exhibit. While we are inside of the exhibit, I must remind you that these are wild animals by nature despite how cute they may be. Please do not crowd them and do not stick your fingers near their mouths. They are well behaved, unlike the monkeys in the next exhibit." He joked, pulling out a bit of a retailer laugh before he motioned for them to follow him further in. "We're going through two doors so that there's no accidents and once we enter the area, please line up against the wall and then we'll go get the honored guests."
He opened the door to allow the guests inside but as he watched Joan go through the door, he decided to play a bit with the man he was with. "Ever held a red panda? Would you like to? I can tell you'll be a favorite with them in no time." He coyly grinned as he passed the last guest and made sure the door to the enclosure was completely closed. Only then, did he open the other door and allow them to enter and shut the door once more behind the last guest.
"Frankie, doors are secured." And with that, a small door opened and slowly two red panda's hesitantly entered and made a bubbly noise before one took to the tree and started to climb while the other scavenged the floor for any treats to nibble on. "Maybe I introduce, Bonnie." He pointed to the tree and then to the other. "and Clyde. As they say, a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. He loves his food. Does anyone want to give them a treat? You - what's your name?" Quill reached into the bag on his hip before holding out a biscuit like treat for him to take.
