Somewhere in the sprawling expanse of Astaria Oregon a women was curled up in bed with a laptop nestled on her lap. The gentle hum of computers and devices filled the small space that she called home. It was a home she had worked hard for, even if there were water stains running down the off white walls and the floor was peeling up in some places. It was still home, a small studio apartment that was cheap and easy to maintain. Some days it was her sanctuary, a place to hide from the outside world and it's horrors. It was her safe place when it felt like the eyes were pressing in, watching her every move. Other days it was a temple, home to her devices that costed thousands of dollars, devices that could take her anywhere in the world, that could tell her anything she needed to know. The faint smell of cigarettes' and weed from the neighbors the incense, her tinted windows the stained glass, her time and sweat her offerings, the massive computer set up on the opposite wall her alter. The world and it's secrets resided in this temple, resting on her fingertips. All she needed to do was turn on a device and the world was hers.
Maxy had spent the day out and about either walking her wolf of a dog or running errands. Lil' John was a massive Irish Wolfhound that needed a lot of exercise and near constant cuddles. His soft snores cut throw the gentle hum of screens as he napped at the base of the bed. He took up most of the room on the worn mattress but she didn't mind. Maxy didn't take up a lot of room herself and his presence was always a calming one, at least when he wasn't dragging her behind him because he saw a squirrel. The day had been filled with grocery shopping and dog walking, a typical day on all accounts. The sun had begun to set behind the high rises and soon, night would engulf the city.
Maxy didn't live in the safest of areas, which was part of the reason she adopted Lil' John. When darkness engulfed the streets danger came out to play as well. For Maxy it was easier to simply stay at home, safe and nestled comfortably in her bed. It's not like she didn't have anything to do. No one would believe a multi-millionaire lived in the area, which was kinda the point. With a cup of black coffee on her night stand and one of her many screens playing a rom-com in the background, Maxy began her nightly activities.
She felt the world around her fade into a grey background as her bright green eyes watched her screen. Her fingers flew deftly over the keys, their speed something to marvel at. She was bored tonight, and boredom always led illegal activities. Most of Maxy's time was devoted to taking care of Lil' John or doing what she did best, hacking. Her presence in the hacking community was that of a legend. Someone talked about with equal parts awe and disbelief. Some didn't believe she existed, there couldn't be someone that skilled, others knew better. Maxy spent most of her time online erasing her presence and filling in the blank spaces that resulted. She was known, or rumored, for helping those that really needed it. The families that were screwed over by big corporations, the little guys who were down and out. Other times she spent her nights exposing vile people. People who deserved to be punished, deserved to suffer.
Yet tonight wasn't for helping or punishing. Tonight would be fun. She had poked around countless government systems in the past and it was honestly getting boring. They were so predictable, it was always too easy. Maxy craved a challenge, or at least some sort of resistance. So tonight she would go after the big guys, the ones that thought themselves the highest and the mightiest, The Aegis.
Most of the time Maxy would just strip away the defenses, disable the firewalls and measly protections put into place. Not tonight though, no tonight she was cautious, or at least more so. Maxy was often too cautious, her paranoia driving her to extreme lengths. The first thing she did was set up what she liked to call The Loop. If they tried to back trace her they would be sent on a wild goose chase that eventually just led back to their own system. Maxy knew she was dead if anyone ever found out where she was. She took her safety and privacy very seriously. Plus it was fun to watch them scramble to figure out who in their own system was trying to hack themselves.
Once her Loop was secure she began her assault, although assault could be considered too violent of a word. She started out softly, a presence that was barely there. Testing and prodding with feather light touches, looking for any weaknesses, any backdoors, anything that was unique or interesting. The world around her had faded. She no longer heard the hum of her devices or the grumbling snores of Lil' John. Her coffee went untouched, slowly growing colder.
Maxy hummed softly to herself, a habit when she was really focusing. They had yet to detect her presence, which was good. The security was definitely on the harder end of the spectrum, probably thanks to artificial intelligence. Yet Maxy was confident, not in a sense of being cocky or proud. She had encountered difficult security and systems in the past, this wouldn't be the first time she challenged herself.
Once her initial 'scouting' was complete she decided it was time. With a mischievous smirk tugging on her lips Maxy adjusted her position and prepared for some fun. It was time to announce herself to tonight's playmates.
