Getting his family alone seemed to be so much harder than he remembered. His dad was far too busy even though he'd told him it was important. All he'd been able to manage was a group text with his siblings to figure out where their schedules aligned. That was how he'd ended up in a private room in a Chinese restaurant with each of his siblings. It was odd, not being somewhere with Dorian. He could perfectly picture how antsy his fiance was back at the Institute. Dorian most often got incorporated into any Amador family bonding - After all it was very hard to separate the two of them. But even when Dorian wasn't there, he was still there. The text messages and pictures the older man sent him made it impossible to forget the effect he had on him. And he knew for a fact that Dorian could feel the effects. Though at the moment, their empathic link was one way. It made him uncomfortable. Though he could easily guess how Dorian was feeling, he couldn't feel it himself and he'd grown so used to that link. But like his radioactive abilities, Ryan's nullification field cut that right off as well. He sat closest to Ryan like always which allowed the field to be smaller and thus more easily maintained. He'd been casually hiding the ring on his hand since they'd arrived at the restaurant, nervous and unsure how to go about it. Joan was perfectly aware that he and Dorian hadn't been dating for the longest time - months but not years. He knew how people generally reacted to engagements that didn't follow at least a year of dating. And he also knew he was the youngest out of the Amador siblings yet the first to be engaged - that and his fiance was older than his eldest brother. All things he wasn't entirely sure where his siblings stood on. But then he forgot and reached up to brush some hair out of his face. Xander noticed quickly. "Shit," he said but the grin on his face and the not angry tone of his voice contradicted the world, "That's Dorian's ring, isn't it?" Joan blanked, blinking at his older brother because first of all he hadn't known Xander had noticed the ring Dorian had worn prior to it being in his possession; second of all while he'd been unsure how to bring it up himself, he'd hoped he'd figure it out before anyone noticed. "Y-Yeah," he replied sheepishly, bringing his hand down and looking at the ring. All eyes were on him now. He fidgeted under their gazes. He knew Ariel was already reading his body language perfectly. "That's your ring finger," Sara pointed out, leaning forward over the table with her twin to get a better look. "Like the ring finger." Joan thought he should've brought Dorian with him. His presence was calming. "You're making him nervous," Ariel pointed out, able to read the youngest Amador almost as easily as Dorian could. Ryan slung an arm gently over Joan's shoulder and pulled him closer to his side. "If you have news you want to tell us, you know we'll support you." Joan fidgeted, twisting the ring on his finger. He heard his phone buzz, knowing it must have been a text from Dorian, who could feel his nerves. His face felt hot. "Dorian proposed," he explained, his voice shy. "I uh - I said yes." He caught a look exchanged between Ariel and Ryan, the two of them in sync as the eldest where as Xander and Sara, as twins, were usually in sync. He'd never had anyone to be in sync with until Dorian. All of them jumped when Xander used his powers to generate the sound of trumpets. As Xander got scolded by Ryan, Sara came over and threw her arms around his shoulders from behind. "Congrats!" she said, <"Our baby brother is growing up so fast!"> The next thing he knew, he was being pulled to his feet and encompassed in a group hug. When they were done, Ryan was cupping his face with both hands and oh there were tears in his eldest brother's eyes, now he was probably going to start crying too. "You're happy?" He nodded. "Yeah." Ryan smiled warmly. "Mum would be so proud of you." "Did he ask for dad's blessing?" Sara piped up curiously. Joan admittedly had no clue but assumed the answer was no. He shrugged. "Only blessing he needs is mine." "Amen!" Xander added, earning an odd look from each of his siblings as he leaned back against the table. "What? It's an outdated tradition if you ask me." He pointed to Joan and grinned. "Two words though: Bachelor. Party." Joan groaned. "Xander." Xander didn't seem to be listening. "We can plan a joint bachelor party since you're both the bachelors here. I'm in charge though 'cause obviously I'm the fun one." Ariel didn't argue but Sara gave him a playful push. "Well I am." Ryan lightly laughed, his arm across Joan's shoulder again. "Have you told dad?" Joan shook his head and lightly bit his lip. "No, he's been too busy... He used to make time for us." He noticed the hesitation in Ryan as did Ariel of course. But Ryan just pressed a soft kiss to his temple. "He'll make time, don't worry." | ...
