Her concern was only growing. He didn't give her a simple yes or no. She had planned on asking why because the answer was obviously no, but she also hadn't decided if she'd try to push it if he didn't want to talk about it. Sometimes all someone needed was to know you were there for them and that you'd still be there once they were ready to talk about it.
The glow to his face vanished so suddenly, it only added to her worry. She sat down when he asked her to, ignoring the dust that rose from the couch, her focus entirely on him. She used her powers just enough to warm her hands to a comforting temperature when in hopes of helping ground him when he took her hands in his.
She listened quietly, not wanting to interrupt him in case it would cause him to shut her out. She understood nightmares and trauma - had her fair share of both - but... She didn't think she could even begin to imagine what his were like. The second she saw tears in his eyes, she wanted to brush them away.
Even with him being such a public hero, she hadn't known this detail of his past. It took her a brief moment to register what he'd said regarding his parents. He'd accidentally caused their deaths and it was haunting him. She wanted to protect him. She wanted to hold him. She wanted to tell him it wasn't his fault but she had a feeling he was getting sick of hearing that from people. He'd probably heard far too many I'm sorry for your loss and it's not your fault I swear to last a lifetime.
And words like that could only help so much.
He released her hands but then didn't take them again. Once he was done, she reached up with her hand and gently turned his chin so he'd look at her. She smiled softly, sadly, warmly at him. Her hands moved to cup his cheeks and wipe his tears with her thumbs.
"I love you," she breathed out, meaning every word. This hadn't - wouldn't - change how she felt about him. It was an accident and she didn't think he should burden all that blame and guilt on himself but she also knew better than to think her insisting that would be enough for him to stop it.
"I can't begin to imagine what you've been through," she admitted, staring into his eyes, tears in her own. "But I am here for you no matter what. I'll do whatever I can to help you. I love you." | ... fire on fire would normally kill us. with this much desire, together, we're winners ... torch |

It was what he had wanted to hear. What he needed to hear. But at the same time, it broke him. Tears had already been flowing down his face, carving little rivers down his cheeks, but now he let out an anguished sob. He fell forward into her, wrapping his arms around her, clinging to the fabric on the back of her dress. He wanted this. He wanted her. He wanted someone to be there for him, someone deeper than a really good friend. He didn’t discount those relationships he had and what they could and did do for him, but he desperately realized how much he wanted someone to be intimate with, someone who would stand by him at that level... But he didn’t believe he deserved it. “Why?” He sobbed. “Why the hell would you or anyone love someone like me after all that? The people who get close to me only get hurt. So just..: why?” He clung to her, his hands turning into fists bunching up the fabric, afraid that if he let go it would fade away and this would all be another dream, another nightmare, taunting him, a monument to all his sins and mistakes. “I love you. I want to love you. I don’t understand why you love me after what I’ve done.” This evening had been a roller coaster. He’d gone from the happiest he’d ever been, to the pits of despair in moments. “I don’t deserve to be happy with you.” Adara Chase

This wasn't exactly the reaction she'd imagined whenever she had thought about confessing her love to someone one day. Tears perhaps, but even then that hadn't been on the top of the list of what she'd expect, if she'd ever thought of that list. She blinked when he sobbed and asked her why. She knew better than anyone that the past wasn't as defining as other people liked to say it was. Her past didn't define who she was now - perhaps it explained a little bit of why she was the way that she was, but it didn't dictate it and didn't define her.
She reached forward, cupping his head in her hands to make sure he was looking right at her. She used her thumbs to wipe away his tears, a smile somehow a mixture of happiness and sadness on her face.
"I've heard that the people who feel the least deserving of love," she explained, "Are the people who actually deserve it the most." She leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, right under his eye. She thought about their first meeting. If he'd told her all this when they'd first met, she didn't think it would have turned out differently at all. She'd still be there, holding his head in her hands, looking at him with nothing but love.
"Neither of us can change our pasts," she continued, gently rubbing her thumbs against his temples. "And while the past may not be okay, that doesn't mean our present can't be." She smiled at him, feeling the faintest pricks of tears in her own eyes. "All you've ever done is save me - in more ways than I can ever explain."
She couldn't make him see himself the way she saw him, she knew that. She wasn't naïve enough to think she held that sort of power over him nor did she want to have that power. True confidence, in her experience, came from one's self. Other people just helped nudge it along.
"If you want to love me," she added, hands trailing down to rest on his shoulders. "Then love me because I'm not going to stop loving you - all of you, the good and the bad. The past and the present." | ... fire on fire would normally kill us. with this much desire, together, we're winners ... torch |

Timothy leaned into her touch, relishing every point of contact, most especially the kiss. Her words were beautiful. He didn't deserve any of this. He felt that was an objective truth. But... If it was being offered... If it was there for the taking... He brought his hands up and cupped her face much like she had done his, staring into her beautiful eyes with his own tired, tear-stained ones. He opened his mouth to speak, to say something, to express how much she meant to him and how much her words had meant. But there were no words. His eyes flicked down to her mouth, suddenly, instinctually knowing exactly the way to express all that he felt. He pulled her in for a kiss. Not just any brief, soft kiss. This kiss was full of all the desire and hunger and sorrow and love that he felt for her. He poured his need for her into this kiss. And it didn't stop there. When they came up for air, he went to her collar, and trailed kisses up from there to her face, which he covered in them, before going back to her mouth. Finally, breathless, he pulled only inches away from her. "If you'll have me, I'm yours. If you want this broken screw-up of a man, he's yours. I think I always have been." Adara Chase
