ABILITIES:
Energy Control:
Surge can control three forms of energy; heat, light, and electromagnetism. He can contain a large amount of energy, and absorb ambient energy from his surroundings to recharge. By cloaking himself in that energy, he's able to fly at immense speeds, far greater than that of sound, and absorb a lot of damage. By extending the cloak to cover other people, he can carry them at those same immense speeds without harming them. Offensively, he can cast the energy from his hands in blasts, or focus it in one specific location to act as a shield. His abilities also allow him to see the entire light spectrum, and can sense the three forms of energy that he can control wherever they might be.
Should he wish, Surge can for a short time trap air inside his energy field and maintain an appropriate pressure inside it, allowing for brief forays into the upper atmosphere with little to no adverse effects.
When utilizing his energy cloak, it allows him to resist most forms of damage. He is still harmed, but the energy surrounding him absorbs a significant amount of the potential damage he would have sustained.
He is practically immune to being burnt or electrocuted by most sources of those injuries, and is practically immune to most sources of radiation.
SKILLS: Timothy Smith nearly completed a doctorate in energy physics, and has a Master's in engineering. A scientific child prodigy, he dabbled in many different sciences, and while he still does on occasion, his focus is still energy physics and engineering. A close third field is computer coding and hacking, but he's got a more brute force method and doesn't have a lot of finesse in that area. His greatest coding achievement, a sentient AI named Alice, was more of an accident than a successful experiment.
WEAKNESSES: While Surge may have a large amount of raw power, the energy he controls still follows the rules. Electricity can be grounded or directed, heat can be transferred and cooled off, light can be reflected and redirected.
Surge's energy capacity isn't unlimited either. Should he attempt to absorb and contain too much energy, it will begin to arc and "seep" out of him. Should he persist in attempting to contain it, it will eventually discharge itself in a large, indiscriminate blast, rendering him unconscious for a time, and exhausted when he wakes up, until he's able to recharge.
While he has a brilliant mind, he can often overlook the obvious. He tends to move quickly without thinking through his actions, which often gets him into trouble against more thoughtful opponents, though when he slows down and plans out his next moves, he can pull off brilliant strategies.
While his energy cloak can absorb a lot of attacks, such as energy blasts or bullets, most kinetic attacks, such as punches or kicks, while dampened, still transfer through to him, although the attacker might take some feedback damage, and attacks that he does not know are coming can easily pierce it. For example, a bullet could easily pierce through and inflict a gunshot wound, but if Surge was aware of the potential danger, he could manipulate his energy field in such a way to counteract it.

Appearance
GENERAL: Timothy stands precisely a fraction of an inch under 5'6". He's got a mop of dark brown hair, and blue-gray eyes. He has a decent, athletic build. He usually wears fairly casual clothes, jeans, t-shirts, and the like, unless he's working on something in his lab, where he dons a lab coat and a decent amount of protective gear, although not quite as much as most ordinary people should, given his ability to absorb most common forms of energy. Given his ability to see colors that other people don't, the things he wears either tend to be bland and colorless to people who can't see things like ultraviolet or infrared, or the colors clash horribly because he's matching those colors that are invisible to everyone else.
COSTUME: Tim's identity is public, so he does not wear a mask. In a pinch, he simply generates energy around himself and goes into combat, but on official missions, he wears an Aegis uniform made out of a fabric of his own design to work with his powers, ensuring that he doesn't suffer any embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions should he burst into flames. It's blue, with black accents. The shoulders, knees, elbows, and boots are reinforced and somewhat thicker. He ends to wear the base bodysuit under his street clothes, and will equip the rest of the uniform when he knows he's going out.

Personality
Timothy Smith's mind works a million miles a minute. He'll jump from one topic to the next quickly, often throwing in little references to side topics that are tangentially related. His bright, happy-go-lucky, wisecracking nature is actually a mask, hiding deep feelings of guilt over the death of his parents, and the plight that his brother is in, not to mention any people he isn't able to save.
He is very friendly and outgoing, willing to trust everyone until they give him a reason to distrust them. He believes that nearly everyone can be saved or redeemed, but there are some exceptions. If his friends or people he considers family are harmed, he will stop at almost nothing to take out the people responsible.

History
Timothy Smith was born in Rochester, Minnesota, to Marion and Samuel Smith. While his parents both worked in the dramatic arts, it was clear from an early age that Tim was more geared towards the sciences. After he won a high school science fair at the age of 10, he was pulled out of public schools and was, for lack of a better term, homeschooled. Which basically means his parents got him every college course he could handle and they could afford in the topics that he was interested in. Patents from devices he invented helped with the bills significantly.
They moved around quite a bit. There were a few years spent in Iowa, a couple in Wyoming, but eventually they settled down in Astaria, Oregon. There, Tim met his one and only good friend, Ivan Stane . They spent a lot of time together geeking out over the latest issues of comics, many of which were based on real-life stories, and Ivan even taught Tim how to code. Ivan was Tim's only real friend, given that, due to his early expertise in energy physics and engineering, he had developed a rather big head and thought quite highly of himself. He did lose contact with Ivan for a few years, and reconnected with him when Ivan was 13.
Five years ago, Tim was preparing to make the final test of his doctoral project, a home-sized fusion reactor. When his parents asked, rightly, if he had put in and enabled enough safety measures, he scoffed at them, and to spite them, and in his arrogance, disabled the ones he had, confident that his design would hold out.
A small miscalculation, a variable he didn't foresee, instability in the isotopes, whatever it was, the device went critical and exploded, killing both Tim's parents. Tim would have been grievously wounded himself, had the radioactive energy not bombarded his body and transformed him. It sheared away all the dark matter and dark energy in his body, which coalesced into its own being, unknown to him at the time, and gave him control over the three most common forms of energy, heat, light, and electromagnetism. Burdened by the guilt that his role in the accident that killed his parents gave him, he vowed then and there, to as a sort of penance, do everything he could to help mankind as a whole.
This eventually led him to join Aegis, and he put the skills he'd been taught by his friend to work, and somehow, mostly by accident, developed the sentient AI Alice for them to help maintain their systems. The being formed out of the dark matter and dark energy that used to be part of him resurfaced here and there as a violent, almost animalistic being calling itself Nihilo when it wasn't trying to rip out your throat. Tim saw this as his direct responsibility, and has been tracking Nihilo and clashed with him more than once. He hopes to redeem him, to bring him around to the side of good, but he's starting to wonder if it's even possible.
