It was no small feat landing the internship with the district attorney's office, but somehow she'd done it. That was how she found herself in the bullpen of Astaria's Police HQ, standing at attention next to the Assistant District Attorney, Jeffrey Scott. He was a taller, middle aged man, but he'd been nice to her and thankfully, not in a creepy way. Erin followed him around like a smaller shadow, dressed in a form fitting yellow dress and a lacy white shawl that covered he shoulders down to her wrists. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail away from her face, but a few stray curls fell in view when she looked down at her clipboard to take notes or appointments for Jeffrey.[break][break] With it being her first day, she was uncharacteristically flustered, and she did what she could to make the best impression. Between running to get the ADA coffee, to even running for coffee for the detectives, she was trying hard to leave a lasting positive impact. So far, she seemed to be doing well. So Erin thought at least. But her ray of sunshine personality was dimmed quite a bit when in a rush to get Detective Stone a coffee refill, she accidentally ran into another Detective. With a little finesse, she managed to avoid spilling it all over the place, but in the process she'd knocked some papers out of the man's hand.[break][break] Fearful, she placed the coffee on a nearby desk and stooped down to pick up the scattered papers quickly. "I am so so sorry, I should've been watching where I was going." She said, muttering to herself about somehow managing to mess up the simplest task she'd done today. "I hope you can forgive me, Detective..." She trailed, standing to full height once more and looking up at the older man, "Detective Moretti. Pleasure to meet you." Erin offered the papers to him, as well as a handshake. "Erin Shuyler. I'm the new ADA intern."

[attr="class","box2"]Moretti was busy today, but it wasn't anything new in the city of Astaria. He sat at his desk, looking intently at the computer screen as he clicked around and quickly typed on his keyboard for information on a case he was working on with Stone, who was currently talking to the Assistant District Attorney, while he was finishing up here. He then went over to print pictures he took of the crime scene out with his smart phone. Once the group of pictures were finished printing out, he held them in one hand with names and addresses of several people he and Detective Stone needed to find who were involved in the case. He started to head toward the roll call room they were using for the meeting, but only made it halfway when he nearly bumped into someone he didn't recognized; dropping the three papers with the addresses he had in his other hand onto the floor when he instinctively reached the hand out with a gentle grip on their arm to keep the other person from tripping over if they did. “Oh, hey,” he explained in surprise. “You okay? I'm sorry, ma'am. I didn't see you.” He chuckled nervously, leaning down to pick up his scattered papers, but she beat him to it. God, he felt embarrassed for not paying attention either. He smiled warmly at her, shaking his head. “It's alright. Things happens. I should have been more attentive too.” He straightened up, still smiling and another shake of the head when he gently took the papers back from her. “Thanks.” He quietly said, studying her for a few moments as she spoke his name and introduced herself as the new intern for the ADA. “Ah. So, you're his new intern?” He arched an eyebrow, shaking her hand with a firm grip. “It's a pleasure to meet you, too, Erin Shuyler.” He then asked, “I guess you've met my partner already. Don't forget the coffee.” He probably didn't need to remind her of the coffee, but did so in case she was too nervous and embarrassed for bumping into him to think of it. He stood there for a few seconds, eyeing her curiously before looking back to where Stone and Scott were, and then heading toward their direction after waiting for her to pick up her coffee. He glanced back to see if she was following him. “First day here? You'll do okay. It can be overwhelming at first, with how busy everyone can be and how different the atmosphere is here than over at the ADA's office, but it'll eventually become like second nature to you.” Another kind smile, he paused to open the door of the meeting room and waited for her to enter before heading inside too.

"That's me." She laughed lightly, glancing over to where Stone and Scott stood. With another look at the detective she gave a shy smile. Erin was silently thankful that Moretti didn't seem upset over the collision that'd just happened. It quelled a bit of the nervous energy, and went a long way towards making her feel less frazzled altogether. At the reminder of the coffee, she lit up, turning to grab the still warm cup sitting on the desk nearby as well as her clipboard. "Thanks. I'm usually not so...scattered. I guess I've just got the jitters." [break][break] Meeting his eyes, she offered a sheepish smile and shook her head. "As ashamed as I am at how obvious it is, yeah. I'm admittedly a little out of my depth right now. Definitely a lot different than my classes at AC." She remarked conversationally, falling in stride beside him as they moved towards the meeting room. Erin thanked the detective and walked in first, handing off the coffee to his partner with a bright smile. From there she took her place at Scott's side, readied with the clipboard and the yellow legal pad on it.[break][break] During the meeting she couldn't help but curiously eye Moretti. He was quite different than Jonas in a lot of ways. At the thought of her boyfriend she saddened a little, thinking about their exchange just that morning. It was becoming ever apparent to her that neither of them were really happy with the relationship but stayed out of the sheer convenience of the arrangement. Erin realized she'd been staring and quickly snapped to attention once more, jotting down notes about the case for the ADA. She realized she may have given the detective an understatement earlier. She was way out of her depth. Ever the optimist though, Erin believed wholeheartedly what he'd said about it becoming second nature.[break][break] Tucking a stray curl behind her ear, she listened intently, not allowing herself to look up from the notepad as she kept the minutes of the meeting. She did her best to keep up, and a brief glance at Scott told her that he seemed to be pleased with her work, or at least found it satisfactory. With a warm smile she ducked back into her notes once more, and if she stole another glance at a certain detective, she certainly hoped he didn't notice it. As the meeting came to a close, Scott dismissed her for a lunch break. For a moment Erin just stood there, not quite knowing where to start if she was being honest with herself.

[attr="class","box2"]Before heading into the room, he gave her a small grin upon hearing how she admitted she was out of her depth here. “You'll do fine,” he assured her. Stone nodded to his partner and Moretti gave him a nod back. “Hey,” He whispered and stood beside him, opposite of Scott as he set the papers neatly on the table next to the case file Stone had set up earlier. “Morning, Mr. Scott. How're you doing? It's been a while since we've last spoke about a case.” He reached over to shake the man's hand before sitting down in his chair. “Sorry about the current meeting place. It's been quite a busy today. So, the roll call room is all we have at the moment.” Smiling apologetically with a light chuckle, and the older man chuckled back, waving him off as if to say 'don't worry about it.' Stone nodded. “Indeed it has, Detective. I assume you've met the new intern, Mrs. Erin Schuyler here?” Moretti glanced over at her, offering her a small smile as he nodded. “Yes, I did,” He answered, foregoing how they met. “Good,” replied Scott, “She'll be here to assist us during the duration of our meeting here.” “All right. Sounds good,” He briefly glimpsed at her again and then fixed his attention on the assistant district attorney. “Shall we begin?” After his partner and Scott agreed in unison, he continued explaining about the ongoing case they were investigating into the murder of the owner of a small mom and pop shop, named John Peterson, and the attempted murder of his wife who surprisingly made it through surgery, and how she called 911 in time before she lost consciousness from blood lost due to multiple stab wounds. He went into detail of the crime while he slid over the crime scene photographs to the attorney, subtly catching Schuyler eyeing him curiously, but didn't react as he spoke during the meeting. “...The wife, Mrs. Deena Peterson, told us when she regained consciousness at the hospital yesterday that her son, Darren Peterson, was in a heated argument with his father the day they were attacked over financial difficulties their son was having due to a nasty drug and gambling problem. Later that night when they were getting ready to close, their son returned, with his two friends, and then all three started vandalizing the store to force them to comply to his demands. When Mr. Peterson tried to stop them, things escalated and one of them shot him in the head and chest multiple times and another stabbed the mother when she was trying to call the police before they stole all of their money from the register and fled the crime scene. Currently, their son and these other two men are our prime suspects in the case, and we've put an APB and warrants for their arrests.” A pause, noticing her looking at him again, but was looking at her a little too long before he realized he was staring. He blinked quickly, looking down at the notes he wrote down in his old leather-bound pocket journal he used for his investigations, in case he needed them while he listened as Scott talked, and then Stone did more of the talking as they made plans until the meeting was finally coming to a close. His eyes darted up from his notes, thanking the two for coming as he stood and waited for them to leave as he and Stone gathered their papers to head back to their desks and continue working after some lunch. “Hey, Luca,” asked Stone, “You hungry? Where do you want to get lunch at?” Moretti shrugged. “Anything. Doesn't matter.” “Oh?” “Surprise me,” He winced lightly, instantly regretting his words.

Stepping closer to the door, she hazarded a backwards glance at Stone and Moretti, the latter in particular. For one reason or another her mind hung on to the way she'd caught him staring at her, but she quickly buried it and gave a small smile at the detectives before leaving the room. Erin lingered outside the door close to the wall momentarily, getting lost in thought both on deciding what to get for lunch and thinking about the tasks still left to do today. By the time she came to her senses once more, the two men were exiting the room and from the sound of it, also discussing lunch plans. [break][break] Her mind drifted back to Jonas once more, and how she couldn't remember the last time they'd gone out to lunch. Part of it was her own fault, she was just so busy with law school and now with the internship that she hardly had time to herself. She was startled out of her thoughts once more, hearing her name and looking up to see the detectives had paused in front of her. Stone looked at her with a smile and glanced oddly between her and Moretti before asking, "Did you want to tag along with us for lunch, it being your first day and all? Luca's buying." He jabbed Detective Moretti in the side playfully. Erin smiled brightly at them, nodding. "Sure! You've convinced me." She laughed, choosing not to voice that it wouldn't have taken much arm twisting to get her to in the first place.[break][break] As the detectives started walking once more, she fell in step behind them, grateful for the company and entirely sure she would've gotten lost on her way out of the police headquarters if it weren't for them. As they got to the parking lot, driving arrangements were sussed out, with Stone deciding to let Luca drive and giving the front passenger seat to Erin. As she fastened the seat belt, she gave a sideways glance at Detective Moretti, a curious look in her eye, before glancing out the passenger side window as the car audibly started. At least she seemed to be making friends already. [break][break] It was a short trip, and they stopped outside a restaurant she was admittedly unfamiliar with. As such, after Stone opened the door for her, she fell in pace behind the two men as they stepped into the establishment. Erin was decidedly not a picky eater, so she wasn't too worried about the situation. Stone asked her about her schooling as they queued for a table, and she snapped to attention. "I'm a junior in law school right now. AC offers a co-op program for their law students. It's super competitive, I'm really lucky to be here." She answered, smiling and glancing at Luca. "Ideally, I'll be doing what Scott does in the future."

[attr="class","box2"]He stopped walking when Stone did, looking at Schuyler and back at his partner when the man glanced back and forth at them, to which his eyebrows furrowed as he wondered what he was planning. Of course, he couldn't say he wouldn't like it. She did seem nice and genuine to him. Yet, no matter how good someone looked, he was still precarious about having another girlfriend after dealing with the last one he had which started off great and gradually went downhill from there for two years until it finally ended before he could snap. The only person who knew what really went down was Stone, who he confided in about when he was going through such a rough patch. His partner was truly like a brother to him. He was smiling a little, completely oblivious to the fact his eyes were fixated on her. She looked good in yellow, he thought, but felt awkward complimenting someone he first met. He didn't hear what his partner was asking, and let out grunt when he felt the man's elbow jabbing him in the side. He quickly looked at him, wide eyed, and eyebrows down. “What the fu-” he exclaimed, but abruptly stopped himself when he heard her laugh and telling Stone she was convinced, and then quickly realized the other detective invited her to have lunch with them. “Oh...” He smiled nervously, suddenly looking like he wanted to crawl under a rock. He should have been listening, and silently scolded himself for acting like an idiot child. Then it hit him he was buying their lunch and he sighed inwardly, sending an annoyed smile at Stone, as if to say, 'You're buying next time, pal.' He cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “We'd love to have you with us for lunch.” He said with a nod, and headed out when they were ready to leave after putting their case file and the contents on their desks. As he walked to the parking lot, he looked over his should at her a few times before heading to his personal vehicle, a Jeep, unlocked the doors with a press of the button, and awkwardly stood outside until he watched Stone help her into the passenger seat. He glanced at him and shook his head with an amused smirk on his face while he entered the driver side. He fastened his seatbelt, and glanced at the other two to make sure they had theirs fastened, locking eyes briefly with hers, before facing the road to drive to where they were going to eat. The trip to the local restaurant wasn't too far from the police department, and it was starting to become packed for the lunch hour with people. Thankfully, there was one parking space available at the front and he happily parked there. Once they were inside the establishment, he spoke to the usher, who jotted his surname and how many people in his party were there, and then he waited around with the other two to be seated when a table was available. He listened as Stone asked her about which college she was attending, and leaned in a little intently, and smiled back at her. “It's a good college. I went there for Criminology and Criminal Justice, and where Stone and I met. We've been buddies since.” “Moretti. Your table for three is ready,” called out the usher with a smile. “Follow me, please.” Moretti let Stone and Schuyler go ahead of him, but ended up somewhat walking beside her. “So...have you been here before?” He wondered after a couple of awkward seconds as they made their way to the back where there were several more empty booths, where the usher seated them in and told them a waiter will be right with them as soon as they can. “Do you like the window seat, or...” He looked at her curiously, waiting patiently.

In response to Luca's words, Erin smiled, eyes crinkling at the edges as she glanced at him and nervously let her eyes fall from his. "It really is. I won't lie, I'm ready to be done with it, much as I enjoy school." She laughed, feeling the weighty truth of that sentence in it's entirety. Endless tests would get old to anyone after awhile. The usher returned and told them the table was ready. As Stone started walking she followed, eventually falling into step beside Luca. Hearing the question, she looked up at him, and shook her head. "I haven't. Have you?" Small talk aside, she was genuinely curious. Not only would she hopefully be working with the detective in the future (at least, she hoped so), but she was legitimately intrigued by him, seeing him act so reserved and polite. [break][break] When they made it to the table, Erin paused momentarily when he asked her about the window seat, before smiling shyly. "I...I do, yeah. Thank you." She brushed past him, doing her best to maneuver in the spaces between the tables, and slid into the booth first. Scooting to the side, she made room for Luca, the ghost of a smile on her lips. Across from her, Stone moved into the booth opposite them, and immediately began perusing the menu. She glanced down at the one laid in front of her, and from what she could tell at a glimpse it was Italian.[break][break] Stone piped up across the table with a playful jab and she looked up, "Your brother's not gonna be pissed at us for going to a rival restaurant, is he?" A peek at Luca made her snort, seeing his expression. It was cute, a sort of deer in the headlights look. She noticed he made that face a lot. Which meant he was cute a lot. She would admit, he was cute in general, but no one needed to know that. A little too late Erin realized she was staring again, and her eyes fell once more to the menu, using it as a distraction and flipping it open to check it. Though she doubted there would be anything here she didn't like, she didn't like being unprepared when the waiter came.[break][break] As if on cue, an employee walked up to take their drink orders, and she waited for the two men to go first before chiming in. "Just water, please." Just as quick as they appeared, the waiter was gone, and she chanced an inquisitive look in Luca's direction. "You mentioned you and Detective Stone went to college together. How long have you been on the force? If you don't mind me asking, that is." She asked, voice coming out slightly meek towards the end as she trailed off.

[attr="class","box2"]He smiled at her shy smile she gave him when she told him she wanted the window seat. “Yeah, I've been here a few times,” He answered her after sliding into the booth beside her once she made room for him. “They have a relaxed, laid back atmosphere, and the food's cheaper than most Italian restaurants around here, but it's delicious.” He smiled again at her for a brief moment before looking down at the menu to keep himself from looking at her. Part of him was also wanting to profile her like he usually does, but he forced himself not to, just this once. She was friendly, beautiful, intelligent, and an interesting young woman, and he figured she was with someone. She had to be – he inwardly grimaced as he caught himself going what he didn't want to do. After he mentally kicked himself, he rested his elbow on the table and rested the side of his head in the palm of his hand and studied her curiously again while he watched her look through the menu. His eyes widen and darted them to Stone when the man brought up his brother's restaurant and why they didn't go there instead. He straightened up, putting his hand down on the table, and stared at him as if he saw a ghost. “What? No,” he exclaimed, getting defensive and probably flustered at the thought of maybe his partner noticed him staring at the ADA's new intern. “Pft. This place is just closer than his.” He laughed nervously, shaking his head as he decided on a couple of things from the appetizer menu to eat since they were quick, and a salad to go along with it, and closed the menu as he waited for the waiter to arrive. He never noticed her staring at him, as he was trying his best to keep himself from eyeing her again. He felt so awkward. He could even hear his mother, aunts, and uncles talking to him about this; always wanting to know when he'll settle down, marry, and have kids of his own. He rolled his eyes at that as he nervously rubbed his hands together before folding his arms and resting them in front of him on the table to keep himself from fidgeting. Once the waiter arrived to get their drink orders, he waited until Stone told the employee what he wanted to drink, gave her a quick glance, and then he looked at the waiter. “I'll have water.” He could use a glass of wine or a whole bottle of it right about now, but he was still on the clock. He quickly looked at Schuyler when she started asking him questions about him and Stone and how long they've been on the force. “Uhm...” He leaned back, thinking for a moment as he rubbed his hands together again. “Well, we've been detectives for, what? Twelve...thirteen years...almost fourteen...” He glanced at his partner, who nodded in confirmation. “...and then before that, we were patrol officers for a few years before we decided to take an exam, and once we passed it, we had a choice to become either a detective or a Sergeant.” He shrugged, smiling. “We chose to be homicide detectives.”

From the corner of her eye, she watched Luca fidget, and then try so obviously not to. Still, she listened intently as he talked about their time as patrol officers, and eventually their exam. It occurred to her, albeit a little too late, that work was possibly the complete opposite of what the detectives wanted to talk about on their break. A chiding inner monologue reminded her that not everyone was so absorbed in their jobs or studies. In a scramble to find a different line of conversation, she latched onto the first thing that came to mind, which just so happened to be her earlier observation.[break][break] "Oh! That's so cool that you two got to stick together." A brief pause passed by, and she smiled sheepishly between them. "I'm sorry, sometimes I can be such a nerd." Erin laughed brightly, drawing a smile from Stone across the table. She caught Luca fidgeting once more, and with genuine and friendly concern, she reached out to lightly brush her fingertips against his bare arm. "Are you feeling alright?" The action served a secondary purpose, giving her a thorough read on the range of emotions the detective was feeling. Erin didn't need her powers to guess he was anxious, however she did need them to suss out exactly what kind of nervous energy he was carrying. A flood of restlessness and something that resembled flustered hit her like a tidal wave.[break][break] "He's probably just had one too many cups of coffee." Stone chimed in across the table, giving Luca a look that she couldn't clearly interpret. Withdrawing her hand, she eyed the detective with a gentle worry. Internally, she tried to decipher exactly what could've gotten Moretti so worked up. Erin's brain helpfully supplied that maybe he was upset about the case. Her brows knitted themselves in a soft frown, and she stared openly at him for a moment.[break][break] "You should drink some water, Moretti." Stone piped up once more, nearly reading her exact thoughts. Once again, with excellent timing the waiter showed up with their drinks, ready to take their orders. For a moment she paused, until Detective Stone gestured for her to go first. With a polite smile she ordered chicken parmesan, and while they went around the table, she looked inquisitively at Luca, like she was trying to piece together a puzzle.

[attr="class","box2"]Moretti chuckled, “Surprisingly. We make a pretty good team, him and I.” He smiled at her, ignoring the smirk from Stone. “Yeah, I'm doing all the work,” joked Stone, laughing in amusement as he was responded with a middle finger. “I'm kidding, and he knows it too. I like to get under his skin sometimes.” "Only sometimes?" Moretti raised both eyebrows, flashing him a smirk back before shaking his head and briefly covered his face with an aspirated sigh. He returned his attention Schuyler when he felt her brush her fingertips along his arm, which caused his hair to stand up on end as he felt chills at the slightest touch. Looking like a deer in the headlights again, he sat there, tensed with his arms crossed in front of his chest. Still, he smiled; although, it looked a little more forceful than the last since he felt his cheeks warm as he blushed. He chuckled and coughed nervously at her question, which made Stone grin as he continued watching the two interact. Part of him wanted to tell them to hug and kiss already, but he knew how his partner was, even if this was one of those 'love at first sight' moments in someone's lifetime. If she was truly different from the last and genuine, this was one of those times. He would hate it ending up like the last, as it nearly destroyed Moretti, but he trusted his 'brother' on doing the right thing, and take his damn time for once. Moretti forced himself to relax a bit, and was about to answer her when Stone chimed in, to which he gave a knowing, yet, annoyed glance to. He bit his lower lip for several moments, rubbing the back of his neck as he did so before finally relaxing enough and rested his arms back on the table. He fixed his eyes on hers and stared back thoughtfully, and then gradually smiled at her softly. “I'm alright, just...” He trailed off, thinking of what else to say when the waiter returned with their drinks. Not wasting any time, he took her advice and sipped on the cold glass of ice water and started to munch on some of the ice cubes while he waited for the other two to order their food. He nodded at what she decided to have, knowing how good the chicken parmesan was, as he had it before. After Stone ordered his, it was his turn, and he ordered a couple of their lasagna fritta appetizer platters, eggplant parmigiana, and a side of their house salad. Okay, he was hungrier than he was before he arrived, but the other plate was more to share with the other two than eating it by himself. “Okay,” the waiter finished writing down their orders, and asked, “Is this going to be all on one check or separate checks?” “All on one, ma'am,” he answered. He nodded with a smile when she thanked him and went back toward the kitchen to place in their orders. “Hungry much, man?” He shrugged, smirking. “What? It's to share.” Stone arched an eyebrow. “It's. To. Share.” “Mhmm...” Moretti rolled his eyes and his partner grinned. “He probably won't share those lasagna frittas with me. He gets those all the time.” “They're good,” he protested. “I know they are. I was lucky to have one bite the last time you ordered them.” "I'll share...” Moretti looked like he had enough of his shit, but the grin alone was enough to let anyone know him and the other detective were only shit-talking back and forth at each other. “...maybe not with you, and only her.” Stone laughed. “I knew it.” “I'm sure you did, Jason,” Moretti was amused and more relaxed than he was a little bit ago. He glanced over at Schuyler, smiling warmly at her. “So...what do you think of your first real case you're working on with Scott and us? Much different compared to reading about them, huh?” He wanted to know her better, and ask her more questions, but this was a start. He didn't want to rush, like last time. He learned his lesson.
