According to her fellow doctor at the clinic, it had been almost a year since Sophia had taken even a single day to herself (save for days when she was physically too ill to come into work). She didn’t want to believe it was true, but she’d gotten used to her own habits by this point to know it likely was. Whether or not it was, this random Tuesday was now a day all to herself. So far, it had been really nice! She’d started the day by sleeping in a bit, all the way til 7:30, and had a real breakfast of eggs and soysages instead of her usual cliff bar on the way out the door. She even used the fancy coffee maker her mother had gotten her for Christmas a few years ago! Sipping a warm mug of joe and reading news articles aloud to Lucky had been most of her morning, before she went out for a walk in Erikson Park. She caught up on one of her favorite podcasts, a horror anthology. It was a bit of a contrast between that and the absolutely lovely day. When she started to get hungry, she stopped at a cafe for a quick bite to eat before heading the to main event of her day off.
Astaria Bay Aquarium had always been her favorite field trip growing up. Void Memorial Zoo was great, but there was something about just finding a bench to park yourself in and watching the fish and fish-adjacent creatures swim that was… just incredible. Sophia used to make time for visits while she was in school and even into her internship, but at some point she’d just… gotten too busy, she supposed. Around that same time she’d gotten Lucky and set up his little 10 gallon haven. She’d never thought about it, but maybe getting him had been Sophia’s way of bringing Astaria Bay home? Watching his orange fins twitch and flutter about the tank definitely scratched the same itch.
Whatever the case, Sophia was at the source now. She’d found one of her favorite benches, placed right by one of the reef tanks. It was a little off by itself, away from bathrooms and the touch pools, so it was mostly quiet and she could just lose herself in it. This was her happy place.
Unfortunately, her happy place meant getting lost in her own head—and forgetting how she was positioned, specifically her legs stuck out into the middle of the walkway, right where someone could trip over them if they also weren’t being careful. And, by Murphy’s Law, someone of course did trip over her legs.
“Oh my god!” she said, hand flying to her mouth. “I’m so sorry!”
