It was a gorgeous day outside, and any sane person who didn’t have other obligations should be outside enjoying it. At least, that’s what Ophelia thought as she made her way to the Astaria Museum. Unfortunately, she had other obligations, the kind that would make her money.
The Jiang Tiandihui. According to her sources, it was a Chinese staff, from the late 1700s or early 1800s. That on its own made it a collectors item that the right people would pay handsomely for, either to keep in their own private collections or to “free” it from museum curators. What made it even more interesting was the fact that it allegedly had connections to the Triads and some of the earliest records of people with superpowers.
Which was why Ophelia was going to jack it.
She’d put a lot of research into this heist, this con. Greased several palms to get the right papers so it looked like she was who she needed to be for this. If she pulled this off right, they would just let her walk out of the building with the staff free and clear, and wouldn’t ask any questions until much later. If she really played her cards right, she had people working on a fake that she could have someone “discover” in exchange for a piece of the reward money.
The sleek black car pulled into the museum parking lot, and Ophelia stepped out, walking with confidence. A tight gray business skirt and matching blouse gave the impression that she meant business, and the sunglasses she wore, in part to conceal her identity, and the confidence she walked with all added up to what she hoped was an intimidating figure.
”Good afternoon ma’am, admission is fifteen dollars.”
Ophelia glared daggers at the young seventeen or eighteen year old boy running the admittance booth. She wasn’t mad at him, she just had to seem offended.
”I think not. I’m from the Portland branch of the Tianing Archeological Society, and I’m here to make an authenticity check on the staff you’ve just put on display.”
She made up the entire society, but had put together enough of a paper trail for it that it would hold up for a couple weeks at least. Long enough to do what she needed to do.
”I-I don’t see an appointment anywhere here ma’am...”
”That’s because there isn’t one. This is an emergency examination. We received a tip that sometime in transit the staff may have been switched with a fake. We need to verify this claim quickly so the police can track down the actual relic, if true. Now are you going to let me in, dearie, or are we going to have to start talking to your manager? The trail of these potential thieves is getting colder as we speak.”
She was pretty sure that was going to get her in the door.

Not just from the glass skylight above it either. She'd known exactly when it had made its way into the museum and there was a real problem with it being here. Jiang Tiandihui. A Chinese scroll. In an American museum. Had they gotten permission to display it? No they had not. She was sure. She had checked. And then made an official report for reclamation. Under her mother's name, but hey there were no records her mother was dead for good. Only Christine and the Triad knew she was dead. As far as everyone else was concerned, she'd abandoned her child and flown the coop. [break][break] But back to business. The part of the museum that housed the scroll was supposed to be closed for cleaning today. She opened the skylight after lockpicking it and slid down on a rope attached to a very sturdy hook she'd prepared. She landed next to the case, her black trenchcoat billowing behind her. And a rainbow pearlescent mask on her face. Better safe than sorry, but she knew nobody would see her. And was alarmed to discover there was just a staff. [break][break] "Did they move the exhibit?" She looked around briefly and found there was no scroll to be seen. [break][break]

Her ploy worked. If this was one of the Dungeons and Dragons games that she used to play with Flea's Circus, she was pretty sure it would have been a natural twenty on her deception check.
Her short heels clicked as the intern led her through the museum, past guests who were gawking at replica dinosaur bones and ancient pottery. She had no time for any of them.
"The, uh, wing it's in is currently closed for cleaning, so we gotta, um, go into the back..."
"Well hurry! Every moment we waste here is another moment the thieves could be escaping with the genuine artifact!"
"Okay! Okay! I'm hurrying!"
This was going perfectly. She loved it when a plan came together. The intern scratched at a pimple on his forehead while he fumbled with his keys in front of the security door. Ophelia made a show of checking her watch. "Hurry."
Finally, he got the right key and the door opened. "Okay, the scroll should be right in here..."
Wait. Scroll? She was looking for a staff. What was all this about a scroll?
She didn't have a chance to ask before another complication presented itself. The intern stared, very confused, at a woman in a pearlescent mask and a black trenchcoat standing in font of a display case, that Ophelia couldn't see into because of the way the light was coming in and reflecting off the glass. "Uh, you're... uh, not supposed to be, um... back here..."
Ophelia recognized a fellow thief when she saw one, and she had no beef with this one, that she knew of. She pulled out her tablet and stylus and started to tap away.
"Pitiful. Disgusting. Shameful. Absolutely disgraceful. The fact is, even if the Jiang Tiandihui housed here is the genuine article, I'm not even sure if we're going to send it back to this museum, seeing as you just failed our impromptu security test," she stated matter-of-factly, pointing at the masked woman with her stylus, "If the thieves didn't steal it in transit, they likely were counting on just waltzing in and taking it from the museum directly."
She emphasised her point by swatting the intern on the back of the head. "I'll have to get the number of your supervisor before I leave. Now, let's let my associate get back to her business, and you can finish leading me to the staff. Time is of the essence!"
She gave the woman a little smirk and a nod to let her know that she had a pretty good idea of what she was doing there, and was completely fine with it and willing to help out.

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]头骨 [attr="class","skulloverlap"]USE YOUR HEAD OR YOU'LL END UP DEAD [attr="class","skullbody"]To Christine's credit, when the intern and the other woman had walked in, and suddenly the woman was talking about an impromptu security test, Christine was good enough to play it off and just play along. She could recognize when she was being helped, and if she had to guess the other woman was a thief just like her. Which meant that she might have valuable information on the exhibit that...wasn't fucking THERE. Christine was a bit pissed at that, if she was being honest. But she didn't let it show on her face, her red lipsticked lips just making a serious line instead of the frown she was definitely feeling. [break][break] "Yes thank you. As you can see, I didn't even need to break anything to get to the exhibit. As far as security, this is a very poor showing." She watched as the intern looked between them, and then heard the bit about the staff from the other woman. The poor intern stammered and stuttered and Christine walked over, the high heels of her boots clicking on the floor as she approached the intern and put a hand firmly on their shoulder. [break][break]
"Calm down. After all, it isn't YOUR fault the museum has failed. I bet you don't even have union." [break][break] "Uh...we do but uh...we don't even have dental." Christine looked at the intern, and then looked at the other woman. [break][break] "They don't even have dental." She shook her head. [break][break] "So the brochures advertising the exhibit clearly say this wing, as do all the paperwork for it. And that is labelled the exhibit. But wasn't there supposed to be a scroll on Chinese superpowers?" [break][break] "The exhibit shows a staff, but they are both there. We just cannot display both at the same time." Christine's eyebrow quirked up. [break][break] "Well no matter. This kind of problem solving is what myself and my associate accel at. I am not simply someone hired to test security, after all. A woman only gets in this field by being truly...exemplary." Christine smiled. She may still have her mask on, but she was very disarming.

Ophelia shook her head and tutted.
“No dental. Shame. Another bad mark for your employers, unfortunately. I’d recommend updating your resumé. Not because of anything you did, but because I’m not entirely certain how long this museum will persist under its current management, at least not once we’ve finished our report. Now then.”
She placed a hand on the intern’s shoulder. Behind her sunglasses, which she kept on to help keep her identity somewhat mysterious, her eyes flashed as she got a quick download. He had a superpower, a very basic one, but it explained his job. His mind could instantly categorize anything in the Dewey Decimal system. Mainly used for books, but she could see an application to objects and people that she could enhance into him. All that was irrelevant to what she needed right now.
She looked him in the eyes from behind her shades. “Now, why don’t you get some gloves and show us exactly why you can’t display both the staff and the scroll at the same time.”
He started to explain. “W-well you see they were, um, afraid that it would, uh, damage the artifact if—“
“I said show us. Please, dearie. We’re on a time crunch. Thieves, possibly escaping with the real artifact, remember?”
“Right! Right! Um. Okay. Let me just... There’s gloves in the storage closet...”
“Go get them, darling. I’ll confer with my associate.”
“Right! Right away, ma’am!”
When the intern had left the area, Ophelia sighed and turned to this other thief.
“Well done, I’m impressed. Absolutely no one had any idea you were inside. Unless you’re particularly attached to your planned means of escape, you could just walk right out the front door with me. I’ve set up a dummy archeological society that’s supposed to examine the artifact I’m here for. I do have a sneaking suspicion that we might be after two connected items, which would make the entire ploy easier.”

Christine would finally be able to pin down just what was uncanny about the woman. And she heard the bit about the archaeological society and she chuckled. [break][break]
"Actually I had a similar plan. I would steal it of course. But I also have a society set up. It's actually legit. And involves the reclaiming of Chinese artifacts linked to the history of the Triad. You see many of these artifacts were 'claimed' by colonizers during war. And a lot of their history should be reclaimed. Like the scroll. The staff is technically also that history, but the scroll is said to contain some key history. And yes, I feel like us working together works the best for this. I have no interest in the staff as long as I can have the scroll. The scroll is what has history valuable to me. The staff is just a historical stick in regards to what I need." Christine grinned. Ophelia smiled. "Well darling, if you have an actual society set up then my story about one just gained some legitimacy. Similar to how you have no interest in the staff, I have no interest in the scroll. I didn't even know it existed until you mentioned it. All I knew was that to the right buyer, that historical stick can be worth a lot of money. If that buyer is your society, then by all means, I'm more than happy to let you have the staff as well, if you're interested."
It was right about then that the intern came back "I-I brought enough for all of us.."
"Yes yes, dear, now lets get on with it, the thieves could very well be making off with the genuine article."
"R-right! Right!"
The intern opened the case and removed the staff, then held it out to Ophelia. "I-if you could hold on to that.."
She did so, and then the intern grasped a small tab that neither woman had noticed on the staff, and began to gently pull. Connected to it, unfurling from inside the staff itself, was a beautifully inscribed scroll, covered in chinese characters and art.
Suddenly, everything made a lot more sense. Ophelia locked eyes with her unexpected partner in crime. This was going to be an interesting negotiation they were going to have to have.
"Well. I see what you mean. Still, this needs to come with us. We have to ensure it's the genuine article and hasn't already been replaced by a fake."
Completely taken in, the intern nodded and began to gently replace the scroll inside the staff. For being a nervous kid, he knew his stuff. "R-right. I really hope it is the real deal."
"I do too, dearie, I do too. Well, we should get going. We have quite a bit to discuss on the way," she said, looking at the woman that she was realizing she didn't know the name of. There were going to have to be some manner of introductions soon.

The intern came back and Christine looked down at her already gloved hands. [break][break]
"You're a sweetheart but I think I'm fine. These gloves are specially made to handle things like this and do not damage. They're lined in such a way that they're still fine for this kind of procedure. Necessary business expense for me, after all." She smiled sweetly and it was actually genuine. They 'got on with it' as her new associate put it. The intern opened the case and removed the staff, holding it out to the other woman. And then the tab was grasped and out popped the scroll. Attached to the staff. She locked eyes with the other woman. And suddenly Christine was whispering under her breath in Cantonese. [break][break]
"<Shit.>" This was going to make things so much more complicated. How were they supposed to take the separate items and go their separate ways if it was one big item? She didn't think her society had the budget to buy the staff as well. This wasn't something anyone had planned for. She recovered as quickly as she could. [break][break]
"Yes, for its safety if it's the real article, but also we do need to verify that it's still the real item and hasn't been tampered with or stolen. If it's being shown in a museum, you understand why authenticity is so so important." The intern nodded along. [break][break]
"Yes, a lot to discuss for certain." And with that, she started towards the entrance at a pace that would be easy to catch up with. Once they were out of the building, Christine turned into a nearby alleyway where she'd parked her getaway car. It was black and an unassuming sedan. Other than the fact it might be mistaken for a ghost car of course. Christine preferred that kind of vehicle. She got in and gestured to the other woman to get in the passenger seat as well. And then she sighed and let out a long trail of Cantonese swear words. [break][break]
"<Fucking shit are you fucking kidding me? Son of a bitch! Seriously, one item? Fuck's sake there was nothing in that history about it at all. Shit!>" Anything that wasn't a swear word in the stream of words was English, although it might have been a little difficult to keep up with. Christine let out a deep sigh and looked at the other woman. [break][break]

As they exited, Ophelia went to her van and told her driver there’d been a complication, she was handling it, and to head to the rendezvous point, then followed her new conspirator to the other vehicle and got in, cautiously, keeping an eye on her new partner in crime.
“Real names already? I’ve only just met you, darling. Tell you what, I’ll let you call me ‘Ophelia’ for now, with the knowledge that it very well could be one of several aliases. If all this goes well, I don’t see why we couldn’t exchange real names.”
She had a good feeling about this person, so she gave her real name. If worse came to worse, she could ditch her real name and pick something else up. She slid the staff-scroll into a case she had brought and grabbed from the vehicle she had originally had prepped, for protection and to make it less obvious what they were carrying.
“However, it might ring a few more bells if I tell you that most people in the circles we tend to run in know me better as Catalyst. Now then, as for our item of mutual interest, I had a Chinese gentleman lined up who wanted to put it in his private collection. I didn’t make any promises though. So long as I get a cut, I don’t mind if we sell it to your society.”

Christine liked when people were agreeable and reasonable. [break][break] "Fine. I usually go by The Charlatan. Pleasure making your acquaintance." Now back to business. She did recognize the name Catalyst from a few places. Someone who dealt in often the same circles she did.[break][break] "I would be perfectly willing to buy it from you. And it would be going to a place that would actually make this whole encounter legal, believe it or not. I have a warrant in the works for taking back an artifact that originally belonged to my bloodline." Hmm perhaps more of an explanation for that was warranted.[break][break] "I'm not exactly a collector, but I kind of am. More like a...repossessor though to be honest. We should discuss the price of this artifact. After all, once you leave with it there is no guarantee I will be able to see it again." A slight smile made its way onto her face, cunning and sly.
