1989 Astaria Institute of Health and Technology He did this at night. Always at night, and always very, very carefully. No one could know. If they knew, he'd be in danger. Not Krackshot, Bradley Alans. He'd be fine. His son would be in danger if anyone knew that the child in stasis was his. He wished he had never taken the domino mask he was currently wearing off. He wished that he had left it on, like Vista and Void. Often, he thought back to that day in 1970-something and thought that only the women had had any sense that day. Himself, Titan, Colonel, all took their masks off and revealed to the world who they really were, and in so doing cursed anyone that might happen to be close to them to being a target for any vengeful psychopath that came along. Krackshot, wearing his costume, quietly dropped down on the other side of the fence that surrounded the Institute. His son was being kept here, in some kind of cutting-edge stasis setup, to keep a rare and currently incurable disease from progressing and killing him. He made sure all the bills were paid for. Anonymously, of course, but he felt confident that Madeline probably knew who was making sure they got paid before they reached her mailbox. It had been over a decade. Part of him hoped they would find a cure soon. The other part knew that when his still-infant son was let out, he wouldn't be able to see his face in person anymore. It would just be too dangerous. Still, it would be better if he wasn't sick. And until the cure was found, he was going to continue to visit him, in secret, at night. If that was what was really going on. It was all too convenient. His son gets this rare, incurable disease, and the Institute finds out about it and just so happened to have a stasis whatchamacallit that was entering human trials, and what better way to test it than by saving a life, right? Bradley wasn't buying it, not completely anyway. The Institute might look squeaky clean on the outside, but he could feel he was close. He had several floppy disks with him tonight. His contact had told him that they should be able to get into the Institute's newfangled computer system and let him find out what they were really up to. What they were really doing with his son. He carefully walked across to the door, keeping in the blind spots of all the cameras. He couldn't leave any trace, otherwise he would just disable them himself. The door's lock was picked easily enough, he'd done it before and they hadn't changed it yet. After that it was a well remembered route to where they were keeping his son. He stared into the strange, yellow-green liquid at his infant son, wearing some kind of mask over his mouth and nose and all manner of tubes and wires going into him. The boy had been born in 1976. He would be thirteen, if he hadn't had to go in there. Because of all this, he was still an infant. At least he wasn't missing his childhood. Krackshot wasn't known for his ears, but they were still very, very good. There was a sound that wasn't right, something off. His first instinct was to protect his son. A pistol whipped out as he swiveled and surveyed the room. "Who's there?" Perses

i'm taking it slow feeding my flame shuffling the cards of your game ❧ He hadn't gotten where he was, even at just twenty years old, by being reckless. Everything he did had a purpose. And that included improving and maintaining security at this building. He'd noticed someone was sneaking into the building. He wondered if his predecessor had noticed but decided that they'd just been incompetent.
He appeared into the room, hidden in the shadows, darkening the shadows to better hide him. He wore a simple long sleeve black shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He looked harmless, all things considered, like one of the local college students. But he'd always thought of himself as so much more.
His hand glowed a faint purple as he waved it, lightening the shadows and stepping out from them.
"I didn't expect to see you here, Mr. Alans," he stated calmly, regarding the older man calculated, purposeful look. It hadn't been hard to recognize him, even before he'd spoken. Bradley Alans was a well known man. There probably wasn't anywhere he could go without being recognized.
"Do you always make a habit," he started to ask, hands clasped behind his back. "At breaking into health institutes and staring at their patients?"
Of course he knew what was really going on with the child in the supposed stasis. He'd made sure he knew all that was going on in this building since he'd taken control of it. He was aware of who the child's mother was and was just now starting to get a good guess on who the father was.
He regarded the pistol Bradley had pulled out for the first time, having purposefully ignored it until now.
"You wouldn't shoot a friend," he said, raising an eyebrow, a smile on his face that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Not in front of a child, at least?" He nodded his head in the direction of the infant and watched closely to see Bradley's reaction to not only the infant but his own presence instead. Bradley whipped around toward the figure that stepped out of the shadows and aimed the pistol at him. He recognized him, and relaxed his stance somewhat, confused as to why this man in particular was here.
"The same could be said for you, Charles. What the hell?"
Charles was one of the military trainees that he and Colonel worked with at the base. The military was always interested in having superpowered soldiers, and Colonel and Krackshot were some of the most experienced former military with superpowers around, so they cut a deal to work with superpowered recruits to help them fine-tune their abilities and determine the best ways to put them into practice on the battlefield.. The only stipulation was that they didn't ask how their trainees got their abilities, even if it seemed that Colonel had a better idea than most where a lot of them got their powers. Krackshot glanced from Charles to the pistol, which was still pointed at Charles, and then back to Charles. "You know I wouldn't miss. I'm pretty sure he won't notice." He cocked his head toward the sleeping child.
He lowered the gun slightly, his body very, very tense. This was the first time he'd been caught coming in here since he started more than ten years ago. "What's going on here, Charles? There's something rotten happening and I'm trying to figure out what. Why are you here? You can't have followed me. You must have been waiting here."
Puzzle pieces were starting to fall into place. Not all of them, but some. Charles obviously had something to do with this. His eyes flicked back over to the boy, then returned to Charles.
"What's going on with Caleb?"

i'm taking it slow feeding my flame shuffling the cards of your game ❧ He smirked at the name used to address him. It wasn't technically the wrong name but not entirely the correct one - just the way he liked it. It allowed him to, for the most part, keep elements of his life separate. He was allowed to work with the military and thus get close to people like Bradley Alans and the Colonel all the while keeping his more personal life away from those same people.
His head tilted ever so slightly, a barely noticeable movement, when Bradley said he wouldn't miss. He didn't think the other man was aware of all he was capable of, in regards to his shadow abilities. He held back around him, around Colonel, around the military. Perhaps he and Colonel had an idea that the younger man held back around them but manipulation was a trick that same young man had learned long ago.
"Perhaps he notices more than you think," he replied calmly and cryptically in a way that made it unclear if he was talking about the child, himself, or Bradley.
"And perhaps you're not as stealthy as you think," he added, cocking an eyebrow, looking more entertained than worried at the current scenario.
His eyes glanced casually to the child when Bradley brought him up again, this time using the little boy's name. His gaze lingered on the child long enough to relay the message that he wasn't alarmed or feeling threatened, that Bradley's gun didn't scare him, before his gaze drifted back to the older man.
He was fairly certain he'd figured out just why Bradley cared so much about this child. It was obvious when he thought about it.
]Maybe he should have lied, kept up the pretense - but Bradley was emotionally involved; it was obvious why. And this had potential. There was a chance Bradley would bring Aegis in, get them involved. But there was a chance he could manipulate this to his advantage, earn another asset, steal some more power.
So he grinned and stated with utmost confidence, "Your son's my property now." 346 ● Bradley Alans ● There's gonna be a long line of people who want to punch Perses lmao [attr="class","cred"]MADE BY VEL OF WW + GS[newclass=.cred]text-align:center;font-size:6pt;color:rgb(132, 132, 132);letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;margin-top:5px;[/newclass] [newclass=.cred a]color:rgb(132, 132, 132);font-size:6pt;letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;[/newclass]

The pistol snapped back up, pointing at Charles' forehead. "Explain. Now." He circled, placing himself between Charles and his son. He wasn't quite sure how much good it would do, but it made him feel like he was protecting him. "Caleb is sick. A lot of money is being paid to keep him in stasis until a cure can be found. He is not property, never has been, never will be." Everything in him was on edge. His trigger discipline was good, his finger wasn't touching it, but he was fast. He could squeeze it in an instant. And he never missed. He always hit the point he was aiming for. "Answer my questions. Why are you here, and explain why you're under the delusion that my son is some kind of property." Perses

i'm taking it slow feeding my flame shuffling the cards of your game ❧ Perses was a simple man - in his own opinion. He simply liked to watch worlds crumble. He knew he could easily do that to Bradley. He could destroy his world simply by explaining everything and how he was powerless to stopany of it. But why reveal it all now when he could drag it out and relish in the other man's suffering?
He looked calmly at Bradley, not regarding the gun this time, but it was clear he was very much aware of his presence. His goal was just to give off the atmosphere that he didn't care about the gun, that he didn't think of Bradley as some threat. Truth be told, he didn't feel threatened at all. He was in control and he knew it.
He waited until Bradley was done talking, done demanding. He waited a minute after that to show he wasn't saying any of this because of the gun. His voice gave no hint of any distress but rather a cold calculation.
"Yes, you and Madeline," he stressed her name to make it clear he knew very well who Vista was, "Or should I say Vista? You both just jumped at the chance to get your son any help you could - her especially."
He took a couple steps forward. "I'd say you should've looked into this place better but then again there's nothing to find. I've made sure of that." Other people had made sure of that but he'd been the one to make sure they did that. So of course he took the credit for it.
"What I mean by your son being my property," he added, "Is that Madeline, bless her naive motherly heart, signed him over to me. Figuratively speaking of course. I would never leave a paper trail." He laughed at that last line as if this was a casual conversation between long time friends. It wasn't.
"The goal is to get your son functioning," he continued, "The son of one Aegis Pillar was hard to pass up, let alone the son of two. Think of the possibilities - He could inherit your abilities or Madeline's or both. He has the potential to be a very powerful card that is now in my deck."
He paused briefly. "You're going to keep this between us, naturally. Your son's potential is just that - potential. There's a chance he'll be utterly useless to me and I have no use for a useless weapon, a useless tool. So if you want him kept alive no matter what, you're going to have to make sure you're useful to me." The gun stayed trained on Charles the entire time he spoke. Krackshot’s rage just built and built as he talked. So this was his game. Some ploy for power, not caring who he has to step on, backstab, use, abuse, blackmail, or otherwise ruin the life of. It made him sick. And to think he was getting friendly with him. He’d had him over for dinner. “I could ask more questions. I don’t think knowing the answers would change anything at this point though.” Bradley lowered the gun, his shoulder slumping, his posture admitting defeat. Charles had him in essentially a stranglehold. He held all the cards. Except one. “I’ll don’t care what happens to me. I’ll do whatever I have to to keep Caleb safe. Even if it means...” He took a deep breath. “Even if it means ending this all right here and now.” Suddenly he snapped the pistol back up and fired at Charles. And he wasn’t going to miss. Perses

i'm taking it slow feeding my flame shuffling the cards of your game ❧ He didn't expect anymore questions. He didn't expect much more talking either. He expected exactly what he got. He knew Bradley well, even if perhaps the other man didn't think so. He knew he would care less about himself and more about his son. In fact, he'd been banking on it.
He said nothing and even cocked his head to the side as if he was unsure what Bradley was about to do. But he knew exactly what he had planned. After all Bradley was the one in the dark, not him. He knew more about Bradley's powers than the other man probably thought he knew.
Perses had known this moment would come. Admittedly he'd expected Madeline to start growing suspicious but he thought it was even better that it was Bradley, an active member of Aegis as opposed to Madeline, who had retired.
And while he knew Bradley never missed his target - he also knew the bullet wouldn't magically change course if he moved.
So right when the shot was fired, he faded into the darkness. The bullet continued in its path but rather than striking him, it lodged itself into equipment. Sparks fly and red lights started to flash. Alarms started to blare.
He appeared out of the shadows directly behind Bradley again, regarding him coldly.
"Well look what you've done," he said and glanced back to the child before his gaze fell onto Bradley again. "That was helping keep him alive." He paused for a moment as if to contemplate this turn of events he had seen coming. "It seems I don't have to kill your son. You've just done that." Everything happened in slow motion. Bradley's finger squeezed the trigger, the firing pin struck the primer, ignited the powder, launching the bullet down and out the barrel. Bradley could only watch in horror as the shadows came and pulled Charles out of the way, leaving the only thing left in its path to be the technology preserving his son. "NO!" The gun clattered to the floor as he ran to the smoking console, frantically looking for a way to silence the klaxons and save his son. "What did you do?! Stop this! I can't have him die!" Bradley whipped around and grabbed Charles, shoving him toward the console. "Fix it! Fix it NOW! I know you want something from all of this. I don't care what it is, you have it. Just FIX THIS!!! NOW!"Perses

Perses watched with a sense of gross satisfaction at how the machine was destroyed, at the way Bradley cried out, dropping his gun and rushing over as if he could save a damn thing. It was almost comical, he thought. He literally had to resist the urge to laugh. Even if Bradley hadn't shouted it, he knew very well that the older man couldn't let his own son die. That was what he was banking on.
He didn't try to avoid being grabbed, didn't try to transport himself away through the shadows. He didn't have to, he thought. There was a plan coming together in his mind and everything was already going perfectly.
He had Bradley right where he wanted him.
"What did I do?" he asked calmly, glancing to the console and then to Bradley. "I believe that's your bullet in there."
He was taking his time on purpose, letting Bradley's panic, his desperation grow until it was spilling over and he would be willing to get on his knees and grovel. When he recognized that exact look in the man's eyes, he grinned and leaned in close.
"I want you, Mr. Alans," he explained and continued without pause, not giving the man time to make some joke - not that he thought Bradley was able to form jokes or quips in his current state. "I want your loyalty. I want your powers. I want your life. I want your position in Aegis."
He stepped even closer into Bradley's personal space. "I want you at my beck and call." He stepped back and spread his arms out. "Do that and your son lives and gets to keep living."
With a flick of his wrist, shadows surrounded the damaged console, transporting it away and replacing it with a seemingly brand new one. The alarms silenced. The flashing lights dulled. He kept grinning, patiently waiting for the answer he knew was coming. | ... your guns are loaded and your lies are the bullets. so here is the trigger, go ahead and pull it ... perses |
