you're not as brave as you were at the start take all the courage you have left ❧ There were four attacks going on right now. Scott had dawned his Atlas costume with the intent of helping out at one of them but then news of trouble at one of the three piers had reached him. Aegis was clearly spread thin as were the police. He'd decided to check out the situation at the pier, and he had a feeling his siblings had too.
As he got closer, he picked up his pace, seeing several bodies limp on the ground. He dropped to his knees by the first body, a little boy, no older than eleven or twelve years old, he reached. There was foam at the boy's mouth, his eyes were wide with fear, his body still. He checked his pulse. Nothing.
It looked like poisoning. He took in a shakey breath and closed the boy's eyes. Getting up, he counted the number of bodies, all with foam at their mouths, all unmoving, all dead. There were ten total, men, women, children. There was only one standing, clearly unaffected by the poisoning, lit by the pier's lamps.
This man wore no mask, just ordinary clothes with a bomber jacket on top. He was grinning and just standing at the edge of the pier.
Scott cautiously approached and as he drew closer, he recognized the man. William Jennings, a man who liked to call himself Viper, was a notorious villain. He'd gone on a killing spree fifteen years ago before being taken down by Aegis - the story of the event said Star Woman delivered the knock out punch. He'd been sentenced to the death penalty and executed quickly because of his powers and threat level.
He had no known relatives, certainly no identical twins.
But there he was. He was older but clearly the same man. And he was clearly not dead.
"Well, well," Viper said, a grin spreading across his face. "You're certainly not Aegis. Was expecting them until, well, you know." He gestured to the city where the attacks were going on. "But alas, the show must go on!"
"You killed these people," Scott stated.
Viper only laughed. "Of course I did! Do you like the cyanide? I thought it was a nice touch..." His voice trailed off as he noticed Scott's hands and eyes start to glow green, the glow brightening and illuminating the two of them. "Looks like Aegis sent someone competent."
"I'm not with Aegis," he growled before throwing a punch right at Viper's head. 413 ● Ivan Stane ● My answer to "What are the Stanes doing during these attacks? Why aren't they helping?" maybe i'm foolish maybe i'm blind thinking i can see through this ❧ He arrived at the pier the second Scott threw that punch, landing gracefully on his feet after flying over despite the slight dizziness he felt after doing so. He only had time to take in the dead body, the man standing in front of Scott, Scott throwing that punch, and oh God, did that man catch his punch--?
His thoughts were cut off as a gust of wind slammed into his back, pushing him roughly several feet. He skidded against the ground, coming to a halt right by a dead man whose face was turned sideways, foam dripping from his mouth, dead eyes staring widely at him.
Ivan admittedly yelped and scrambled back. A young woman stood where he had been, dressed in all white, brown hair tied up in a bun, eyes hidden by a domino mask. Her hands were glowing a pale grey.
Ivan pushed himself to his feet, eyes widening. He'd never met someone that could manipulate wind like him. The way her hands glowed... It was so close to the white of his powers. He admittedly felt a little less special, less unique.
"Who the Hell are you?!" he demanded. He didn't recall any wind manipulating villains - surely Tim would have mentioned one to him.
She paused, pursing her lips thoughtfully. "Mm, call me Dove."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Dove? Okay, let the record show I had a bird name first." With that he threw the largest gust of wind he could muster at her.
And she easily deflected it.
"Fuck."
The pale grey glow appeared at her eyes too, glowing through the mask. She moved her arm quickly, throwing a blade of wind directly at him. He moved his arms to block the blow but instead of the wind dispersing like he knew the same attack from himself would've, it sliced through his jacket's sleeves and his skin underneath, drawing blood.
He cried out in both surprise and pain, stumbling backwards. His wind couldn't cut like that. He tried to keep from shaking but that... That scared him. What else could she do?
She was slowly walking closer to him, the glow never once fading from her hands or her eyes, when he demanded again, "Who are you?"
She grinned and pulled her hand back, wind appearing in a swirling ball around her hand. "I'm the improved model." i may only have one match but i can make an explosion ❧ Her priority was the civilians still around. They seemed to be together - oh... They were all a family, including the deceased, visiting on a vacation. Some were sobbing, others silently in shock. Some had their phones out, screaming at 911 operators. Others were live streaming the fight. They'd just lost family, including children. Her heart ached for them.
"You're not safe here," she insisted, "You need to go." Her eyes darted around, trying to see if anyone from the police or even Aegis were coming but they were busy with the other attacks. She and her family were on their own.
That was when she heard Ivan cry out. Her brother was in trouble. Scott was also in trouble but Ivan was the closest.
She ran, turning invisible, before colliding into Dove, tackling her down and breaking her concentration on the wind attack she'd been preparing. She remained invisible, straddling Dove and pinning her down.
She noticed the glow return to Dove's hands and eyes but then it spread all over her body. The last thing she thought was that Ivan needed to knock Dove out-- Before Dove roared, wind propelling out from around her, shoving into Lisa and sending her flying into the air. Her concentration was broken and she turned visible again.
She landed on her shoulder hard, pain escaping her lips. She pushed herself up, grimacing anytime she tried to put weight onto her right shoulder. If she was lucky, it was just severely bruised. If she was unlucky, it was either dislocated or broken.
She got to her feet, staggering a bit from the pain, trying to ignore it but that was obviously easier said than done. She took in the scene around her. Ivan was going at it with Dove again - either Dove had attacked him or he'd attacked her in retaliation for hurting his sister. Scott was still pinned in battle with Viper.
Was... Was the water around the pier rising?
Her eyes widened and she called out to her brothers, "Look out!!" i'll be your hero whose standing strong who protects you from any fight ❧ The two of them got there in time to see Lisa fall and Ivan stop Dove from launching another attack at Lisa. They noticed the water first. Both young men skidded to a halt, standing close to each other as they watched the water rise in the form of a large wave that lingered ominously over the pier.
Julian noticed a young woman at a corner of the pier - Had she been there before? The woman's hands and eyes were glowing blue.
"There," he said, pointing toward the woman.
Shane's eyes flickered quickly in the direction he was pointing. Then they were off. Julian's hand glowed orange as he ran toward the water manipulator. Pieces of metal flew to him, forming a sword. The water manipulator was focused on keeping control of the wave; she couldn't notice him or focus on him without losing control of the wave.
He slashed her across her back just as the wave hit.
The wave hit him first. He barely had time to register Shane reaching for him before water crashed into him. The water didn't go away either which told him he somehow hadn't done enough to break her control. He had a feeling his siblings and Shane were caught in the water as well.
And he knew they could all only hold their breath for so long.
He wasn't sure long he'd been under the water when it started to burn. The temperature hadn't risen at all but suddenly his skin was searing. As much as he knew he shouldn't, his mouth opened in a cry, muffled by the water which rushed toward his lungs.

this world's a warzone i've got a shield i won't surrender ❧ It was nights like this that made him feel severely under-qualified to wear his mask and call himself a vigilante. It was nights like this that made him think they were all in over their heads. Nights like this made him wish his life was normal.
The water was burning and he didn't know why. All he could do was tightly shut his eyes and try very hard to resist the urge to scream or cry out but it was just that - very hard. But this also wasn't the first time he had to endure pain.
There was blood somewhere out there - he knew Julian's sword had connected. There was no way it couldn't have. He knew Julian too well to doubt him. He knew there was blood spilled he could manipulate. But that required concentration and it was hard to concentrate when it felt like your skin was being burned off.
He kept his eyes tightly shut, trying to push past the pain. He just needed to concentrate enough. He could sense the blood within his own body. But there was something more. There was blood in the water. He didn't know whose it was but it was enough. He focused on it, willing it into a sharp point and pushed it toward where the water had first came crashing from, where he remembered seeing the water manipulator.
The water burst away from him as quickly as it had appeared. There was a cry, a woman's voice saying "Triton!!" but all he could focus on was the relief of no longer burning though his body still stung. He was on his hands and knees, taking in ragged breaths. His heart pounded, his mind screamed at him to look for Julian, to see if he was okay.
But all he could do was will himself to keep breathing, replenishing his lungs.

you're not as brave as you were at the start take all the courage you have left ❧ It wasn't long until he knew he was in trouble. In fact it wasn't even a second. His punch was caught by Viper in a tight grip. He knew something was off. He felt the second the poison seeped through his gloves and embedded in his skin, invading his veins. He wasn't sure what poison it was - Did they all feel the same? Perhaps it was more than one.
All he knew was that his vision blurred and his stomach twisted and lurched. His mind clouded. His limbs felt heavy. Everything about his body suddenly felt wrong and dangerous. He didn't want to die - Not like this.
His hand was released and he was shoved back by Viper. He stumbled and fell to his knees, the poison coursing through him. His power reacted to his fear - the pier groaning as the gravity on it was increased, his eyes glowing a dark green. He took in deep breaths only for his stomach to lurch with them and he retched.
He couldn't focus - His blood was starting to feel like it was on fire. Suddenly a foot, kicking out, cracked under his chin, sending him on his back, pain flaring.
Then the water came. His eyes focused long enough for him to see Viper brush a hand into the water, a grin wide and wicked, before the water crashed into Scott. He was pushed farther back. He hadn't had time to take in air.
Then the burning started. He knew he needed to keep his mouth shut - He was a skilled and trained swimmer. Hell, he was a lifeguard. Yet the pain overwhelmed him. His hands started to glow too as he cried out. Beneath them the legs of the pier started to bend - causing Dove, Viper, and Triton above them to stagger.
When the water receded, all he could do was collapse. The glow faded as he slipped out of consciousness. The next thing he knew, Lisa was there and tackling Dove. Before he could do a thing, his sister was sent flying back. He growled and threw a blade of wind at Dove which she easily deflected. He pushed himself up and moved in close, catching her in combat, the two of them throwing wind back and forth quite literally. She easily dodged or deflected his attacks. It took more effort for him to dodge hers and took even more than that to try to deflect them.
"Look out!!"
Lisa's warning came a second too late. Dove kicked him square in the chest, throwing wind with it and effectively shoving him a good distance from her. By the time he readjusted his stance, the water came. He tried to pull wind around him to block the wave but soon found himself swept under.
Then it started to burn.
His hands and eyes glowed white as his body reacted to the pain, to the sensation of being in far too much danger. He could feel, somewhere under all that pain, his power reaching out to try to form a funnel of wind around him to push the acidic water away. When that didn't work, his body tried to transform.
But he couldn't concentrate enough. All he could focus on was the pain. Something about it - not the specific pain but the intensity - was familiar enough that if he could have focused, he would have wondered how he knew what such pain already felt like.
It felt like an eternity under that water, struggling to not open his mouth, to not breathe in, wondering how long he could hold his breath. Then it was gone and he was collapsing onto the ground, gasping and coughing. The wind around him shifted protectively before the white glow faded and his body went limp, his mind slipping into darkness. | ... maybe i'm foolish, maybe i'm blind, thinking i can see through this and see what's behind. got no way to prove it so maybe i'm blind but i'm only human after all ... sparrow |

She probably should have tried to avoid the water herself. Maybe she would've been able to avoid, if not barely. But her mind was on her brothers - as it often was when she knew they were in danger. She moved to try to get to Scott because he was down, probably poisoned, when she got hit with the wave.
It felt like the breath was shoved out of her lungs when the water collided with her body. She forced herself to take in more air than she thought she cold hold, knowing she'd need it while under the water. Opening her eyes while under the water wasn't ideal but she needed to get to her brothers.
Then everything started to burn. Her eyes widened before she forced them shut. Her power reacted, trying to turn her body invisible to try to hide her, a pathetic attempt to protect her. She couldn't concentrate so all she could manage was flickering in and out of visibility.
She willed her body to move against the pain. This wasn't the first time she'd been in pain - Alright it was the worst so far but it wasn't the first. She swam up, trying to get to the surface of the water. If she could get her head above water that would be one less part of her that was burning.
She'd just broken the surface when the water dissipated, dropping her hard against the pier. She groaned, rolling onto her stomach and coughing up water. Her vision blurred. Her body ached. Her head throbbed from hitting the pier. She thought she caught a glimpse of someone approaching, thought she heard the sound of a gun firing, but her world was soon consumed in darkness. | ... young blood, run like a river. young blood, never get chained. young blood, heaven need a sinner. you can't raise hell with a saint ... chameleon |
