ABILITIES:
The most notable ability that Tenebra has is the complete inability to feel pain. She never has headaches, never feels a cut, never feels a burn, never feels frostbite. She has been known to operate for weeks without realizing she had a broken bone. See WEAKNESSES for the downsides associated with this.
Tenebra formerly was able to control energy, similarly to Timothy Smith . However, this power has been greatly diminished, currently she is only able to really make her hands glow slightly and emit a charge similar to static electricity.
SKILLS:
Through sheer necessity, Tayla has had to develop significant martial arts skills. She's very adept at keeping away from her opponents' attacks, even though she feels no pain from them.
She nearly completed a PHd in Energy Physics, and holds a Masters in that field, with a Bachelors in engineering and quantum physics. However, recently she's been letting those areas slide, and the information isn't as readily available as it once was.
She is self-taught with a number of weapons, including rifles, handguns, knives, and swords. She also possesses a working knowledge of explosives, however she is far from being an expert.
WEAKNESSES:
Tayla has no sense of touch. She developed a haptic feedback suit that bypasses the destroyed nerves throughout her body and directly transmits sensations to her brain, allowing her to simulate a sense of touch. However it does not extend to her face, and should she be deprived of it, while she initially had taught herself how to be able to function without a sense of touch, she is terribly out of practice.
Her haptic suit is vulnerable to EMPs and other means of disabling technological devices, although she has equipped it with a reasonable amount of surge protection.
Her inability to feel pain can cause many problems, as she will often not realize she has been wounded until she notices some other external sign, such as, for instance, a puddle of her own blood on the floor, or her arm bending the wrong way. This generally leads to more complications in her healing unless she has someone watching her back. While her haptic suit provides a level of feeling, she hasn't been able to bring herself to equip it to enable her to feel pain.
Aside from that, she possesses a practically human physiology.

Appearance
GENERAL: Tayla has dirty blonde hair that falls just past her shoulders. She stands about 5'7", a little taller if she wears something with a heel, which she does on occasion. It's typically a short, wide heel when she does, as she values practicality over style. She shows next to no skin, due to almost never taking off the haptic feedback suit that gives her something resembling a sense of touch. Said suit is skintight, a dark black that if you look closely, has some trace amounts of gold and silver woven into it. It covers her enter body, from her toes up to the base of her jaw, and extends up the back of her head slightly underneath her hair. The power source is located at the small of her back, in a rectangle that is approximately three inches tall and six inches wide.
She does wear clothing over this, typically jeans and a long sleeved shirt, and if the weather allows for it, a hoodie. She usually equips herself with boots of some sort, and as noted above sometimes with a short, wide heel.
COSTUME: Her costume is essentially an extension of her haptic feedback suit. Programmable nanofibers extend to cover her face, protecting her identity and head, and thicken to provide protection similar to a helmet. Similar nanofibers thicken across the rest of the suit, protecting her torso, arms, legs, and back. It's not bulletproof, and it won't stop a direct knife thrust, but it would adequately protect against a glancing blow. In order to preserve mobility, it does not thicken at joints, and only marginally in places along her torso that she would need to move.
Her mask leaves her hair exposed to keep from having to constantly figure out some way to deal with helmet head after every time she uses it.

Personality
In costume, Tenebra walks with a confidence and grace that is born of figuring out what works for her and doing it so much that it's second nature. Her fighting style is completely unique, having figured it out by trial and error over the past five years.
Out of costume, she tries not to be noticed. She'll slump, put her hands in her pockets, and stare at the ground. Should you actually start to talk to her, you'll find someone that doesn't put up with a lot of bullshit at first. Once she gets to know you, then the tolerance level rises. She's got a good heart, and wants to help people, but she's definitely willing to sacrifice the one for the sake of the many. On the surface, she seems like she's just searching for a foothold in life, but just under the surface it's clear there's something she's running from.
Even with her initial barriers up, she's got a snark for most situations.
Due to her unique origins, some pop culture references will go right over her head, and occasionally she'll make others that make no sense to anyone but her. She's slowly but surely starting to figure out what is and isn't a thing in this universe.

History
Tayla Smith was born to Martin and Samantha Smith on March 21st, 1993, in Astara, Oregon.
In another universe.
She was that universe's version of Timothy Smith , and her life initially followed a similar path of science and discovery. She was a scientific prodigy and had nearly completed a PHd at age 21. The final remaining step was her thesis project, a nuclear fusion reactor small enough and inexpensive enough for eventual commercial distribution.
But something went wrong. In a moment of extreme hubris, she deactivated safety protocols directly in response to her loving and supportive parents reminding her to check and make sure they were active. She believed her design was so perfect, she wouldn't need them.
She was wrong.
The resulting explosion killed both of her parents, and flooded her body with energy and radiation, changing her and granting her control over three of the most basic forms of energy, heat, light, and electromagnetism.
The grief of losing her parents, and even worse, by something she did, motivated Tayla to try and make it right. Timothy Smith, in the main universe, tries to make it right by serving humanity as a superhero.
Tayla tried to find a universe where it never happened.
She shifted her focus away from energy physics to quantum physics and multiverse theory, and in the space of a year she had a device that would let her travel from one dimension to another. She spent some of that year helping the heroes of her world, but it was mostly on a for-hire basis to make sure she could fund her project and research.
Finally, she tried it, fueling its immense power requirement with her own abilities, and stepped into another world. Almost immediately, she knew something was terribly wrong. Instead of finding a world where the only difference was her parents were still alive, she had found a world that was ruled by a superpowered tyrannical dictator. It didn't take her long to step out of line, get caught, and brought for questioning. When he discovered she was from another universe, the tyrant pressed her for all the information he could get from her. He kept her for another two years, torturing her, experimenting on her, and attempting to wring every last bit of information about how to travel to other universes he could.
The torture damaged her. The nerves in her body that processed pain and feeling burnt out, leaving her unable to feel any sensations on her skin and immune to pain. Unique tortures the tyrant developed specifically attacked and damaged her powers, leaving only a small fraction of what she used to possess.
One day, though, finally, she escaped.
A resistance group stormed the prison she was being held in, believing one of their captured leaders was being held there. They were somewhat disappointed to learn that the person they were looking for had been executed almost immediately upon capture, but determined if Tayla was valuable to the tyrant, she could be valuable to them.
The next two years Tayla spent as a freedom fighter. It took some time to teach herself how to operate without one of her five senses, but she was a quick study. She developed a haptic feedback suit using technology stolen from the tyrant's forces and her own ingenuity to replace that, and started teaching herself how to fight.
Finally though, she was able to get it back. Her interdimensional device. She knew how long the tyrant had had it. She knew he had probably studied its intricacies and had to be attempting to replicate it. What then? Where would he stop?
What about the other universes that also had a tyrant like him? Or would have a tyrant like him?
She decided to use it. To travel again. Find another world, one that hadn't taken so much from her. Maybe try to give a little back to another universe that didn't suck as much as this one. Help keep another world from becoming like this.
She convinced the resistance group to assault a power plant. The device needed a large amount of power to work, and she couldn't provide it anymore. Believing this world to be unable to be saved, she found an opportunity to link her device to the power system and use it, abandoning the team of freedom fighters she had led there. She found herself in another Astaria, this time, the one we all know. Her goals right now are simple. Find a way to live, in this new world and with herself, and find this world's tyrant before he rises to power and kill him.
