TW: Blood/gore. Detailed descriptions of a serial killer NPC's past murders of teenagers, the elderly and a pregnant woman. This includes gore, torture and death of an unborn child.
Ah, Haven. The slums of Astaria. He hated it, as the area smelled constantly like drugs, piss, vomit, shit, and blood to him. The only thing he liked about it was how crime-ridden it was, and how the patrol officers never want to come down here, unless they absolutely have to, like escorting an ambulance, or when a SWAT team is sent down here for a raid of some kind on the gangs or drug dealers. It was a rare occurrence, even when his division at the police department was sent down here to investigate the usual dead body. Something he tended to take advantage of if his vigilante work brought him here after doing his own private investigations on the side.
Wearing his usual dark clothing under his long coat, he started stalking his target; learning their routine and gathering evidence against them. His target was a suspected violent serial killer, named Keagan Ruben, who ended up being released due to lack of evidence before the man went to trial. Ruben was intelligent, he’d give him that, by not using the same MO for each murder, and made sure he didn’t leave any evidence behind. He was very clean, meticulous with his murders, but extremely cruel and violent toward his victims he chose to kill. While he fooled the police and the FBI who were investigating the four heinous murders he did, the man didn’t fool him.
He had broken into Ruben’s penthouse in Uptown during the early afternoon hours while the man was at work, to make sure he really was the one who murdered the four people in different parts of the city. Luca didn’t want to make a mistake and kill someone who was truly innocent, and if he had to break some laws in order to confirm if someone’s guilty of a crime or not, then so be it. Inside, he found a box the man hid underneath floorboards in his living room, which held personal items stolen from the victims in zip lock bags, including a small collection of large, sharp hunting knives he used to stab and slash his victims with, still stained with blood - human blood. He could recognize the scent of the victims’ blood on the knives - the fear and pain they felt in their last moments before the killer took their lives in cold-blood. A human being’s blood had a different taste to it if filled with fear and if they were in pain, than if they weren’t. It can be rather…intoxicating, exhilarating, and addicting to him; which is the only reason he refused to bite into someone, taste their blood, and eat their flesh - a dark secret he’s kept with him for so long, and would go to his grave with it. Not unless Cassie wanted to learn more about him. He wouldn’t keep such a thing from her.
A little after 8pm, Luca followed him out of the Downtown area and then drove over to Haven, where he followed him into the The Drunken Dog Bar. While he watched Ruben make a bee-line to meet up with a group of people playing pool and drinking as they enjoyed the night, Luca sat in the back, and started ordering drinks to blend in with the large crowd, while he kept an eye on his current prey. While he wasn’t the original detective who investigated the murders, he started looking into it when he was released from custody. The man had a lot of money, was born into a rich, successful family, and took over his father’s business as the new CEO of the company after his father retired; thus, giving him the ability to afford a good lawyer, which also had something to do with his release from custody. Typical bullshit where people with money can buy their get out of jail card, while other criminals, who don’t have the money, end up in prison, whether or not they’re innocent. If the legal system worked like it should, then I wouldn’t be so busy dealing with it in my own way. As for Ruben, he certainly wasn’t innocent, as he claimed to be.
Your crocodile tears didn’t work on me.
Ruben didn’t look at all like a serial killer, but the young man was a psychopath, manipulative, and extremely violent under the mask he wears when interacting with people. He was such a great actor, pretending to be normal, when he wasn’t. He was evil. It was a stark reminder to never trust someone with a kind face. Not unless one could smell a person’s intentions, and he could smell the blood lust coming from him the moment they entered the bar. Ruben was on the hunt again for his next victim.
The hunter becomes the hunted, Luca thought with a subtle smirk on his face as he traced his fingertip of his middle finger around a ring stained from a glass into the table-top from frequent use from past drinkers who sat at this table before him. He rubbed at his light stubble beard as he looked on, while Ruben continued to be friendly toward those he was interacting with - drinking, laughing, and having a good time, while no one was the wiser of his true intentions.
When it was Ruben’s turn at the pool table, he lined up his shot, and ended up locking eyes with Luca. Luca didn’t care as he glared back at him from under his brows, grinning wolfishly at him. The killer blinked, subtly surprised for a moment when he noticed him, and for the next few seconds, they stared down at each other until the businessman quickly looked away as he hit the ball with his pool cue, but didn’t seem to do well to the looks of it.
What a shame.
“Shit!” shouted Ruben as he stepped away, punching the wall behind him out of anger before turning around as he crossed his arms and watched as someone else took their turn at the table, while he sometimes glanced over to where the detective-vigilante was sitting with growing hate in his eyes.
Luca grinned in amusement, leaning back in his chair and taking a swig from the tall glass of liquor he ordered. Sometimes he enjoyed making himself known to his prey and then inserting his dominance without doing anything else other than staring them down long enough to make them squirm; especially those who pretended to be an Alpha around others, like Ruben. He was weak, and that's why he preyed on the elderly, women, and children, because they were weaker than him. Those victims didn’t deserve to die, but at least Luca will be able to give the dead the justice they deserved.
Suddenly, Ruben seemed to have enough of being watched, and started to walk over to him with an angry look on his face and clenching and unclenching his fists. Luca kept a slight grin as he didn’t move in his chair. “Can I help you?” he asked his target.
Ruben frowned, “I can ask you the same thing, man. What the hell are you looking at?”
“Nothing much,” Luca replied calmly, unlike the agitated man in front of him.
“Are you a cop or a reporter? Because I’m done with both of you fuckers,” The man snapped at him, raising his voice and causing others to stop what they’re doing to see what was going on. “I’m innocent, okay? Some asshole who had it out for me framed me. So, piss off and bother someone else, asshole.”
Luca scoffed, shaking his head. “Aww, you’re angry? How about we go outside and talk it out, like the sweet and innocent, understanding young man you made everyone believe you are, then, Mister Keagan Ruben?”
“What the fuck? Who the fuck are you…?” He glared at him suspiciously.
Luca stared back, unmoving, with the wolfish grin over his lips again, but didn’t answer. When he didn’t respond, Ruben smacked the detective’s glass off of the table and it shattered against the wall he was seated next to. Luca didn’t react to his aggression like the man thought he might. Instead, he kept the same grin and it infuriated him. He was about to start a physical fight with him, but a tall, muscular man who was the bouncer of the establishment, rushed over after the bartender told him to handle them.
“Hey, you two,” The bouncer demanded, “Get the hell out and take your shit outside where it belongs, before I kick both of your asses.” When Ruben glared up at him, the bouncer growled, “Now, shithead.”
Ruben stared at him for a long moment, then at Luca, before letting out an angry scream before storming off. “See you outside, you prick.” He said to the detective before exiting the bar.
Luca smirked, getting up and calmly heading out and glanced around the front parking lot. Ruben wasn’t in sight, but he easily picked up his scent and could hear the man’s heartbeat fast in his chest, as well as him breathing as he tracked him around the back lot behind the building. Not here either, but his scent went into a back alley in between a row of buildings on either side. He quietly laughed at the luring tactics Ruben was trying to do. Instead of following him directly, he took a shortcut around the slightly rundown, but occupied buildings, and headed inside an old apartment building’s hallway that exited out into the alley. He stepped quietly into the doorway, looking left, and saw Ruben crouched behind a wooden fence, ready to ambush him, and holding a butterfly knife in his right hand.
He smiled. While fully capable of taking on opponents of various sizes, Luca never rushed a battle to leave room for mistakes, at least not anymore - unless he was in a desperate situation where he needed to. He’d allow opponents to strike first in order to expose a weak or blind spot to take advantage of them. In most instances, he adopted stealth and sneak attacks, as opposed to direct confrontation. He often stalked his victims from the shadows and disposed of them with minimal effort due to quiet steps and quick movements he’s learned to do over the years. He took advantage of any opportunity that presented itself, including the use of the surrounding environment.
He silently headed over to him, and stood not too far behind him with his hands in his coat’s pockets. “So, this is how you must have killed the pregnant woman taking a walk, huh?”
Ruben gasped, quickly standing up as he whirled around to face him. “Shit,” he exclaimed, “You fucking bastard. You are a cop. Yeah…I’ve seen you around the damn police station after they arrested me. You can go fuck yourself.”
Luca laughed softly. “Yeah, but right now…I’m not here as a cop.” He slowly smiled at him as the man glared back. He stepped forward, gradually decreasing the space between them. “You may have fooled the detectives and the FBI agents who were investigating you, and the news media into thinking you’re an innocent person, but you didn’t fool me.” He took another step forward. “I know you brutally murdered the elderly couple after you broke into their house a month ago. I know you tortured them before ending their lives, and then mutilated their corpses.” Another step forward, and he was a couple of feet away from him now as he continues,
“I know you took a ball bat and used it on the pregnant woman. How you bluegoned her until her skull caved in. How you…” He growled, startling the man somewhat. “...stabbed her in the stomach over sixty times, killing her unborn child, and then cutting it out of the womb.” A pause, tilting his head as he watched the man smile in excitement of remembering his kills. “I also know you killed the two young teenagers in separate incidents. How you ran over the skateboarder repeatedly after you hit him with your car until he was dead, and then strangled the other one to death with a wire after breaking into their own home while they were alone.”
“Yeah…” Ruben cackled. “I was so nervous when I broke into the elderly couple’s home. It was my first time killing people, but I was so excited. It was exhilarating, especially when the woman started screaming for me to stop. I stabbed them so many times. It was so fun. You should try it, man.”
Luca shook his head slowly, staring at him with murderous intent. “I don’t kill innocent people. People like you, on the other hand. I kill people like you.”
The serial killer laughed. “Look, I don’t have time for this,” he said, “So, I’ll get rid of you, since you know my secrets, and then I’ll get back to doing what I do best.” He smiled wickedly. “Killing.”
“You can certainly try, little man.” Luca simply replied.
Calling him small must have hit a nerve as he smelled the anger radiating off of him like a nuke had went off. “You should’ve brought a gun with you!” Ruben suddenly tried stabbing him, only to have Luca dodge out of the way and grab his wrist. Luca aligned himself so Ruben’s right arm was outstretched across his own chest, and his free hand was positioned in a choke-hold around Ruben’s neck, and then forced the knife out of his grip as he broke his hand. His target tried to use his left hand to pull off Luca's grip, but was not successful, as the detective was much stronger. He then threw him again into the fence, hard enough that he crashed through.
Ruben laid there, groaning in pain for a moment before turning around just as Luca shifted into his partial lupine form. He started freaking out and struggled to back away on the ground, eyes wide in fear when he realized what he was. “Oh, God! Stay away from me!” he shrieked.
Luca stalked over to him, growling aggressively as he revealed his claws to him. “As you can see, I don’t need a gun.” He snarled, baring his canines at him.
The man struggled to his feet and started to run, but Luca tripped him, and then claws at his back several times as Ruben continued to try to crawl away, screaming in terror and agony, and started to smell the same way his victims’ smelled. The same fear they’ve felt before being murdered. He roughly snatched a clump of hair at the top of his head from behind, pulled him up and craned his neck back, before quickly using his free hand to rip his throat out. He released him and the man dropped back to the ground. He stood there, listening to him gargle and choke on his own blood for a few seconds before passing out from the large amount of blood loss, and eventually stopped moving when he died.
Luca sighed, glancing down at his blood-soaked hand, flicking some excess blood off of his claws and fingers, and glanced down at the body one more time, as he shifted back to his regular form, and took a handkerchief to clean the blood off of his hand.
