Cal scrunched up his nose momentarily before smoothing his face out, remembering that he was pretending that the situation did not impact him at all. It would suck that his client wouldn’t get their drugs, but at this point, all Cal could do was hope that it didn’t damage his reputation too much that he failed the delivery.
Something about Colonel’s next words unsettled Cal in a way that he couldn’t explain, a twisting feeling in his chest that made his stomach roll and his heart sink. Getting the drugs onto the streets was hurting people. Of course, Cal knew that what he was doing wasn’t the most ethical and the fact that he was providing drugs to people who would sell them wasn’t helping his community at all… but something about being told that he was hurting people made his skin crawl. This was not the first time the thought had occurred to him, quite the opposite in fact, but it had been his own brain saying it. Hearing the words come out of someone else's mouth… He shook his head, wishing that his brain was an etch-a-sketch and the movement would erase the thoughts swirling.
“Coffee alone would be a bummer for sure…” he said, his voice slightly more hesitant as his brain raced along the trail that Colonel had unintentionally laid for him. “I think… you should expect company at 1 tomorrow. Someone will most likely show up.”
He nodded at Colonel’s words, understanding the dismissal for what it was- an opportunity to bail before he got in real trouble. He turned to leave before turning his head back to Colonel with a smile. “Maybe the person responsible for this would want to hear your old stories. I bet they’re great.” With those words, Cal sprinted off into the dark with his mind made up.
‘I guess I have plans tomorrow.’
