Jaina eyed this cop with a raised eyebrow when he apologized. There was clearly more to him than he let on, but beyond a mild curiosity, right now Jaina didn’t give a shit. She was tired. She died yesterday. She wanted to go to what passed for a home for her and sleep.
She laughed bitterly when he asked about friends or relatives. “You looked me up. You know what put me in here the first time. I don’t have any relatives that are this side of the grave. And friends? Ha! You clearly haven’t spent any time around sixteen-year-olds. They tend to grow up. I can’t. The AWD is fine. I can handle myself. Wouldn’t be the first time, won’t be the last.”
She sighed and looked up at him, exasperated. “Can we get this whole thing moving? Either lock me up somewhere or take me to the AWD, I’m tired and I want to sleep.”

He let out an exasperated sigh and frowned. While he didn’t have much experience in talking to the younger generation, he understood she was giving him attitude due to her peculiar circumstances. She appeared exhausted from what she’s going through in her life. While he could heal from death, he was still able to grow up, unlike her, and he couldn’t fathom what he’d do if he were stuck in a teenage body for the rest of his life, and deal with what she’s been dealing with. He certainly didn’t envy her, only sympathized. “I was only making sure in case anyone missed something in your files, Jaina,” he replied mildly, despite how annoyed he was feeling. “Fine, if you’re sure you can handle yourself, then I’ll take you there.” Luca ushered her to follow him out and back into the station’s office area, to get his things from his desk. He decided to fill out his report he needed to do about Jaina after he’d dropped her off at the AWD. While at his desk, he grabbed his phone, keys, and detective badge, and put the first two items in the side pockets of his blue jeans, and then clipped his badge to his belt. He kept an eye on her as he took out his wallet to fish out enough money for her to buy food and a prepaid phone she could use. Finally, he picked up a small stack of his business cards from his desk and handed her one, along with the money. “Take my card and the money,” he told her, “It’s enough money for food and get yourself one of those affordable prepaid phones. My card there has my number on it.You can call me any time if you need help or anything.” He didn’t know why he was even bothering to help this girl, but he felt compelled to. She had no one to care about her for such a long time, she also most likely wouldn’t know why he was doing what he was doing for her. “You might not care or want my help, but…at least keep it and give it some thought after you get some sleep.” He shook his head slightly and shifted around in his stance, and sighed as he grabbed his keys out of his pocket, and headed toward the department’s parking garage. “All right, come on. Let’s get you, uh…home, I guess.”

Jaina shoved her hands into her jacket pockets as she followed him through the station, muttering "If I can't handle myself it's not like it'll matter all that much, worst case scenario I end up right back here without you being a party pooper."
She just kind of stood there and watched as he grabbed a bunch of stuff from his desk. She was completely disinterested, lost in her own little world, thinking about what the best route through the AWD would be back to her little hideout. She needed to avoid McGuire lane, if she had her days right then Greg would be bumming around there and either be high as a kite and feelsy, which she didn't want to deal with tonight, or looking for a fix and would gladly shank her for whatever she had on her that he could pawn off. Either way, very inconvenient. Garfield Avenue would be her best bet, she could take that down and then slide over to Holland street.
She followed this guy into the parking garage, only realizing then that he'd given her money and a business card. She looked at it, then up at him, looking at her expectantly, and she sighed and tossed the money back to him. "Listen, I'm tired. Any other night, sure, I might help you get your rocks off for a few bucks and a ride, but tonight? Nah. Not feeling it. I'm already in a shitty mood, messing with your dick isn't going to help it none. I'll walk."
She turned and began to walk, rethinking her route now that she wasn't going to be dropped off. The good news is it was still close, she'd just have to duck down Molina Boulevard first and hope that feral cat wasn't there...

Luca turned around when he waited for her by his jeep in the parking garage, and didn’t expect her to throw back his money he gave her. He grabbed it before it could fall to the ground, and stood there, eyes wide in shock, but then he became absolutely horrified at her insinuating he wanted her to mess with him like that. He tensed up, not even realizing he was holding his breath until she started to walk away from him. For several moments, he couldn’t move, nor speak. He could hear her walking away, as the echoes of her shoes echoed loudly for him along the concrete floor. Once he finally started to allow himself to breathe, he slowly inhaled and exhaled deeply through parted lips, and turned around and watched as she kept on going before snapping himself out of it and quickly headed into his vehicle and turned it on. He sped over to her, slowed down to her walking speed, and put his window down. “Look, I’m not going to hurt you or force you to do anything like that to me,” he reassured her, “If you don’t believe me, that’s fine. I’ll understand. I’m only trying to help you, Jaina…” He sighed, still horrified somewhat. “I’ll give you another chance to hop in for a ride to the warehouse district. You can sit in the backseat if it makes you feel safer. If not, I’ll leave you alone.”

Jaina just kept walking as he pulled up beside her. Truthfully, she didn't care if he hurt her or forced sexual acts out of her. It wasn't anything she hadn't dealt with before. She was just tired. She just didn't want to deal with it right now. It was just part of her life that she accepted, but right now, she still had a lingering headache from her brain putting itself back together, so she'd just rather not.
She stopped walking though as he pleaded. There was... something. He sounded desperate, sure, but... not the desperate that a horny asshole looking to get off was. She looked at him, narrowing her eyes, trying to see what ulterior motive he had behind this. There was always an ulterior motive. She had assumed it was originally just to find where she lived so he could raid the place later and lock her up or something, then she assumed he was like most every other guy and even some gals and nonbinary folks she'd run into that just wanted sexual satisfaction.
But she wasn't getting any of that from him. And it was confusing. Her head hurt enough as it was. She sighed, rubbed her temples, and crawled into the passenger seat.
"Fine. Whatever. I'm not giving you a blowjob on the way or when we get there. Don't try and guilt me, I don't give a fuck. I've got a headache and I will have a shiv when I get to my place so I will mess up your pride and joy if you try shit and I'm not willing."
It was a tactic she'd used before, to varying degrees of success. Usually she ended up dead, which sometimes she considered a success.
She looked at him staring at her. "What? You're looking at me like I"m some lost three-headed puppy or something."

He sighed in relief when he watched as she crawled into the passenger seat. He slowly shook his head in disappointment, wishing she didn’t act like everyone was her enemy. He gazed at her empathetically, wishing she would allow him to help her, but he guessed he was staring too long at her to her liking, and blinked. “Sorry…” Luca put the jeep in drive and began driving out of the garage, and headed toward the warehouse district. He glanced over at her once or twice before saying anything to her. “I know things seem extremely terrible and distressing to you now, but it can always change for the better if you let it,” he softly spoke to her. “I know how it feels to die, and then come back after your body heals you, while everyone moves on and dies normally. I understand the physical pain and the emotional pain that kind of ability gives you. It has its advantages, but…disadvantages too.” He sighed. “What I’m saying is, you might not heal exactly like me or others like us, but we were born with powers…abilities…whatever you want to call them, and…you’re not alone. I’m sure there is someone out there who can help you and help you better understand your power, and maybe help control it somehow, where it will no longer cause you any grief.” He glanced at her, getting closer to where she wanted him to take her. “I’m sorry you’ve been through a lot…and your lack of trust of people is warranted, and…” he trailed off and chuckled sadly. “Forget it. You probably don’t give a shit what I’m saying anyway.” He drove in silence for a few more minutes, and once he arrived at the warehouse district, he stopped at a stop sign. “Do you have a specific street in mind where you’d like for me to drop you off?” He didn’t look at her, staring straight ahead. The area seemed deserted, but he knew there were others hiding about, doing drugs, or other illegal activities. He could smell them from here.

Jains rested her head against the window and just stared out into the night as they drove. She listened to him talk. She started a little, surprised to hear that he was another one like her, and she was pretty sure that professor from the college too. She’d seen a website that got her thinking. She sighed in exasperation.
“Listen, I’m not sure you do get it. You got to grow up. You get to live a normal adult life. I’ve been sixteen for sixteen years. And as far as I’ve been able to tell, I will never get any older. It fucking sucks. There is no “controlling my gift.” It happens whether I want it to or not, and I’ve tried a shit ton of different things to keep it from happening. I just want to move on. I want to die. But I can’t.”
She started unbuckling her seatbelt when he stopped. Buckling up was a habit she just never had broken, despite having limited experience with any kind of vehicle over the past sixteen years. “You can just drop me here. I’ll be fine. Not like I can die.”

Luca sighed inwardly, listening as she unbuckled her seat belt after he stopped at the stop sign. He turned his head to look over to her while she was still in the passenger seat. “You’re right, I don’t get it. I grew up, but I haven’t really lived a normal life. While I grew up like everyone else, I was trying to mainly survive my damnedest out there, not knowing if I was the only one with abilities, and if I was immortal or not, because back then, there was nothing like the internet, allowing people to connect, and during that time, Europe was the center of superstition and fear. So, it wasn’t like we could talk freely or show off what we can do. I still don’t know if I am immortal, or how long until I start aging normally again, or how long until someone is finally able to kill me and I stay dead.” He gazed intently at her and spoke in a serious tone. “Trust me, it wasn’t fun at all during the old days in Europe. I only was able to meet a few in my travels who had some kind of superpower, who were willing to help me control what I am or help me finally accept what I am. I was desperate to have help so I could blend in and feel some sort of normalcy.” He sighed, shaking his head at the memories. The detective smiled sadly at her, looking distant for a moment as he whispered, “Admittedly, there are days where I have the same thoughts as you…wanting to move on, to finally die, to be at peace, but I can’t. Something’s holding me back, and it isn’t my superpowers.” He returned his attention to the front again. “Anyway, I’ll let you out here then.” He pressed a button to unlock the passenger door, and waited patiently for her to get out, while handing her the money he wanted to give her at the station. “Please, take this, Jaina. I don’t want anything in return. If you don’t trust me, and think I’m being a liar to you, how about I just prove it to you, through my kindness and willingness to help you, hm? What do you say?” His eyes held his hope she would accept it, but his expression was of uncertainty.

TW: Attempted Rape
This was turning into a whole thing. She didn't like that she was warming up to him. He seemed nice, like he was really trying to help, but she didn't trust that anyone was really that genuine. She'd learned that there were only two sure things in the world. She couldn't die, and everyone wanted something.
She snatched the wad of cash, still eyeing him with suspicion. She held it up and shook it at him as she spoke. "Okay, I don't owe you anything. You didn't give me shit, I found this on the ground somewhere. That's how I'm gonna make this work."
She shoved the money in her jacket pocket and turned away, giving a sassy wave as she started to walk off. "See you in a couple centuries. Or the next time I end up at the morgue. I guess. Whatever."
Once she thought she was out of his line of sight, she pulled the money out and began counting it. She knew it was a bad idea to flash cash around in this area, especially at night, but she couldn't help herself. She wanted to know how much it was. How nice things were going to be until the next significant reset. Maybe she'd buy some good food. She could get some Nacho Bitch with this.
"Eyy girlie! You're smart this time! Got the toll right there in your hands for us!"
Jaina's eyes shot up. Shit. This wasn't the street she wanted. She hadn't been paying attention. There was a "gang" of sorts of thugs that liked to make life even tougher for the few homeless people that holed up in the AWD. They'd camp out around the best, most intact warehouses and charge "rent" or "tolls" for passing through. They didn't always just take money, either. Jaina'd run into them before. She knew where they hung out, and knew to stay away. But this whole thing had made her distracted.
She tried to shove the cash back into her pocket as the four men approached, surrounding her. One grabbed her wrist and pulled her hand and the money back out. "No! Wait! Stop! I"m not- I'm not giving you that!"
Jaina struggled and kicked, but the men just laughed. "You're feisty tonight, aren't you girlie? I like feisty. I think I'll take a little more than just this bundle of dough as payment tonight."
Jaina swung her arms and kicked with her legs ineffectually as they started going for her clothes. She hated this. She didn't want this. She just wanted to go home and go to sleep. She didn't want to deal with this tonight.
Why did life hate her so much?

TW: mention of attempted rape. Blood and goreLuca nodded, raising his eyebrows and smiled briefly when she accepted the money this time. “Whatever works for you,” He kept a watchful gaze as she shoved the money in her jacket’s pocket and walked away. He had a subtle grin when she told him she’ll see him later, and thought to himself of how he’d rather see her in a couple of centuries and not in a morgue over and over again. He put the jeep in drive and gradually pulled away from the curb once she was out of his sight, and headed down the adjacent direction of where he last saw her. He stared ahead, thinking about how alone Jaina was and how much of a dangerous area this shithole of a district was. He growled through clenched teeth, shaking his head as he pulled over halfway down the street and turned it off. He took off his badge and gun, and hid them in a locked box he had underneath the passenger seat. The detective jumped out of the vehicle and made sure the doors were locked while he looked around his surroundings, gazing at the buildings and various warehouses which dotted the area. There were only a few with lights on, but the rest were darkened, which didn’t matter to him, as he could see in the dark, and everything looked day to him. If it weren’t for his heightened senses, he’d thought this whole area would be abandoned, but it wasn’t. There were “cockroaches”, or “prey”, as he liked calling them, wandering around, hiding in the darkened places throughout the district. A few were mostly harmless and didn’t bother anyone. The area tends to get cleaned out, but more keep showing up. The AWD was like Haven, a beacon for criminals and thugs. He reached into his back seat and grabbed his hoodie and a long jacket he usually wore on his “nightly walks” to blend in. He rather not look like a cop around here. He started walking briskly down the street where he last saw Jaina as he covered his head with his hood, darkening his features and obscuring his face from view, while keeping his head down in the process. There’s CCTV cameras down here installed by the Astaria Police Department. Some work, others were broken by thugs and the police never bothered replacing them, because of course they didn’t, but the rest were fake. He remembered a working camera being around here, and he couldn’t risk being caught on camera and seen. Before long, he heard a commotion happening out of sight, but he could pick up a man speaking, and smelled about more than one, along with Jaina, who was not wanting to give them the money he gave her. He clenched his teeth and pulled back his lips as anger started pulsing through his veins. His normal human teeth formed into elongated, sharp canine teeth, and he flicked his fingers as he rested his arms by his sides, and his fingernails grew into long, thick, sharp claws. He let out a growl, but it was low enough for none of them to hear as the men started attempting to sexually assault her as he rounded the corner where the thugs were with the distressed, young woman. Eyes glowing amber, he quickly stalked over to them unannounced, and swiftly grabbed one of the men by his neck and pulled him back with a loud, angry growl as the man he grabbed yelped in surprise. He squeezed hard, digging his claws into the skin and then ripped out his neck. The man cried out in agony, and began choking on his own blood as he fell to the ground. He quickly went after the second and third thug, who was caught off guard and screamed when they saw him. He grabbed the second one by his head and threw him headfirst into the side of the building; the force breaking his neck and fracturing his skull on impact, instantly killing him. The third one started cursing wildly in fear. He quickly stood up, aiming his gun and firing blindly at Luca, but missed all but a couple of bullets as he emptied his clip on the detective-vigilante. The two bullets managed to get Luca in the arm and shoulder, but he shrugged it off, and smiled menacingly at him, baring his teeth as he growled, “Nice try. You can run if you want, you disgusting piece of shit. It’ll be more fun.” He let out a sinister chuckle. “Fuck this!” The man cried, leaving his last buddy, who stopped what he was doing to Jaina, and stared in horror at what was happening. Luca looked down at the final man, who was on his knees, and looking pale with fright. “Stay there…” He quickly ran after the other one, and gained speed as he went to run on all fours, and snatched the man by his ankle, and tripped him. He then started slashing his claws at the screaming thug’s back, turned him over, and grabbed his neck with both hands, before finally leaving him with deep gashes in his neck. He stood up, and took several deep breaths before slowly looking over his shoulder at the last thug, mostly covered in the man’s friends’ blood. He watched as the man was slowly getting up and panicking as he skittered back, and tripped over a pile of trash, and fell on the ground as Luca returned to where he and Jaina was. He glanced down and his glowing amber eyes seemed more human for a brief time he was making sure she was okay and alive as he slowly walked passed her. He focused his attention on the remaining thug, who ended up pulling out a gun and firing at him, but the bullet grazed his right cheek. Blood trickled out of the wound for a second, and then the wound healed. He fired several more times, watching as each bullet made impact, causing Luca to stumble a bit, but it was all they did to him. Blood swept out of the wounds at first, before pushing the bullets out as they instantly healed. The man gave up trying to shoot at him as he crawled toward the middle of the street, realizing they did nothing, and Luca was too fast as he ducked before the last bullet could hit him in the head. Shooting him only led to making him angrier anyway. The man panicked even more, trying to crawl away as he started begging for mercy. “I’m sorry! I’m fucking sorry! I-I won’t cause trouble again! Just let me go and I’ll leave!” cried the thug as he stopped crawling away and raised his arms in front of him, as if to shield himself. Luca scoffed, “Really?” He shook his head. “I’m sure your other victims tried to beg for mercy too.” “Please! Just leave me alone, you mon-!” Luca didn’t bother listening to him anymore. With rage in his eyes, he wildly went to town on his face, neck, and chest area; clawing him to death, and stopped a little after he killed him with the final blow. Chest heaving somewhat as he panted from his attack, he stared at what he did to him for a long moment before turning around, reverting from his partial transformation to his human form, and looked over at Jaina. “Jaina…” he whispered softly as he walked over to her and wiped the blood off of his hands and face as best as he could. He’s going to need a shower after he gets home to clean off their blood completely. He squatted down near her, gazing at her while catching his breath. "They won't hurt you anymore." While asking, "You okay?" It was a stupid question, but an honest one, and he needed to know if he needed to call 911 for her or not. He could remain anonymous if she needed him to.
