| She loved when rich people bought rich houses, filled them rich things and crap security. It made breaking in when they were away oh so easy. She didn't really care that it wasn't a challenge. Easy money was still money.
She never stopped to think this could've been a trap. She hadn't really made that much of a name for herself as Torch. No one would go to the trouble of setting up a trap for her. Besides if it was a trap, she could easily escape it, she had no doubt.
She slipped into the penthouse easily, admittedly wondering who owned it. It was decorated in a way that she could only describe as cold and detached. She shuddered. She didn't like people like that.
She flicked her flashlight on, an empty bag slung over her shoulder. There was a safe somewhere - there was always a safe somewhere. She walked confidently, having already cased the penthouse earlier in the week. She knew the resident wasn't here. Some older man who she was pretty sure lived alone. He was either trying to be a bachelor way past the age he should've or he just preferred a life of solitude.
Either way, he had expensive taste. She found watches in the bedroom, ones she knew could fetch a hefty price. She'd put them in her bag and then moved back to the living room, glancing at an artwork hung on the wall. For a second, she thought it was depicting Noah's Flood but then she noticed everyone was drowning in darkness in it. She may not have been to Sunday school in years but she was fairly certain that wasn't how the story went.
Her flashlight flickered. She smacked it against her hip. It flickered then went out. No, it wasn't just the flashlight. The whole room was darkening more than she knew it should've been at that time of night. It became so dark that no light could breach it. All that remained plain to see was the painting.
Adara dropped the bag and the flashlight. She snapped her fingers, a red glow sparking around her hands then igniting into flames.
"Whose there--?!" her words turned into a sudden gasp as something dark, cold wrapped around her throat tightly. She was shoved back by her throat, colliding with the wall just underneath the painting. Her mind blurred, her concentration wavering, as her head hit the wall. The flames around her hands flickered out of existence. Her mind could only focus enough to form one thought.
Crap.

| Why did he pick the people he did? Each asset he collected held a use to him either now or someday. He was a planner, after all. He liked to think ahead, to get ahead, to prepare for the unknown. But each new asset came with a degree of difficulty.
Each one needed their own incentive. Some could be easily blackmailed. Others could be frightened. Some could be manipulated into thinking they owed him everything. But he could never truly rely on those incentives. He always had a fail safe, one that they weren't often aware of.
He planned to have that fail safe with this asset too.
Adara Ember Chase, also known as the fire manipulating thief Torch. He'd heard of her because of course he had. There wasn't much he didn't hear about. She wasn't the most well known out of those with powers but she had potential - and she had powers none of his current assets did.
So he'd set the trap. She'd fallen for it so easily he was a bit disappointed. But she was vain, petty, greedy. He valued those characteristics so he decided he could ignore his disappointment.
The security in the penthouse was actually the best. After all, it belonged to him. The painting was his favorite touch.
He let her get comfortable, confident. Then he struck. He appeared in the shadows and quickly got to work. He flooded the penthouse with utter darkness, essentially creating the darkness of a black hole. He left the painting in view purely as dramatic flair.
Her watched her turn, opening her words to demand, her hands on fire, clinging to any semblance of control.
But she had no control.
He frowned and snapped his fingers. Out of the darkness shot a vine, created by that very darkness. It slammed into her throat, wrapping around it tightly and cutting off her words. He concentrated and that vine shoved her back, colliding her with the wall, just under the painting.
He strode over to her, seeming to appear out of the darkness. He let the vine's grip loosen enough that she could breathe and talk. He glanced at her hands and darkness wrapped around them like rubber, tightly to snuff out any flames she might think of summoning.
"Ms. Chase," he said, voice firm. "It's time we talked."

| After the shock wore off, she realized she could breathe. It wasn't comfortable but at least she wasn't suffocating. Any relief that realization might have brought, though, disappeared when someone appeared out of the darkness. She wondered if this was the owner of the penthouse or if someone else was trying to rob it and saw her as competition.
She moved to snap her fingers, summon sparks that would lead to flames but suddenly darkness was wrapped around her hands, preventing her from using the oxygen around her to create any fire.
This wasn't good - and she had a feeling that was an understatement.
The fact that the man's face was completely covered by a mask that also clearly manipulated his voice sent a shiver down her spine. There were numerous reasons why he'd want to restrain her and she didn't like any of them. He claimed to want to talk to her but she had a feeling it was more so that he wanted to do all the talking and have her just listen.
She'd never liked giving men what they wanted.
"Fuck off," she snarled, trying to hide how unnerved she felt at the fact that he knew who she was. Her eyes glowed red as she tried to summon fire to her hands but the darkness there made it impossible. The glow to her eyes faded.
"Who the fuck are you?!" she demanded. It was one of numerous questions she had but she thought it was the most appropriate first question. The second quickly following, "What the fuck do you want?!"
She wanted to burn him simply for attacking her, restraining her against this wall. She was also starting to think that maybe the penthouse had been a trap from the start.
Double crap.

| She was afraid, he could tell. She wasn't the best at hiding it, especially when she was clearly taken off her guard. He wasn't sure if that though was what scared her the most or the fact that he clearly knew her name. There was a lot he knew. There was also a lot he didn't know but he'd never admit to that.
"You and I just have some business together, Ms. Chase," he replied to her fuck off demand, "I assure you after that, you'll be free to go."
He reached up and took off his mask, letting it drop to the floor. He didn't need it. She wouldn't recognize his face, and even if she did, she wouldn't remember in a bit.
He watched her with amusement as she tried and failed to use her powers. It wasn't as amusing as he thought having actual nullification or power dampening technology would have been but he had to make do.
"You may call me Perses," he added, reaching into his pocket and taking an item out. It looked like a simple shot except the needle was long - unnervingly long. "The rest of my identity doesn't matter."
He stepped forward, calm, clearly in control, coming to stand directly in front of her. "You see, Ms. Chase, I have a business proposition for you. I have plans and, well, your skills - your abilities - would come in handy quite often."
He spread his hands out, looking into her eyes. "I could tell you the details of my plans. After all, by the time I leave here, you're not going to remember a thing. You're going to wake up in your apartment as if you never tried to rob this place. All evidence that you ever even planned this robbery will be gone. All memory of this place will be gone from your mind. This is all part of the proposition, you see."
He paused as if to let her take this all in but in reality he didn't care. He just wanted to see the look on her face.
"Oh, and I forgot to mention," he continued, holding the needle up, clear for her to see. "You don't have a choice."
He reached forward with his free hand, fingers curling into her hair and yanking her head roughly down, exposing the back of her neck. He then injected the needle right where her head met her neck.

| The moment he started talking, she knew this wasn't going to end well with her. The way her said business told her that she didn't have much of a say in this. She was afraid, it was obvious, but she was also growing angry. She tried to get through the shadows but they only grew tighter, briefly cutting off her air, causing her to gasp before it loosened around her neck.
When he said his identity didn't matter, she knew she wasn't going to find out who he really was. Either he'd erased all record of himself or he convinced himself that this Perses was truly all that he was and possibly ever had been. She would've found that sad if she didn't find him terrifying.
So he wanted her for her abilities - most likely the hot ones and not the thieving ones. She'd met plenty of men who wanted to use her for her powers. She reacted the same way to him.
"Go fuck yourself," she snarled, her eyes briefly glowing, trying to summon fire to her hands but failing, the glowing fading soon after.
He was standing far too close for her comfort but she was also growing more and more angry. Her entire expression, not just her voice, was a pure snarl of rage. How dare a man take control from her - how dare anyone take control from her. The moment he let his guard down, she would make sure to burn his face off first. Then she'd take care of the rest of him until only a pile of ash was left.
But then he continued talking and he was so sure of himself and his words... What was going to happen to her... He sounded so sure that she knew he wasn't delusional. He wasn't lying. Every word he said was the truth. Her fear was back.
Then he held a needle up and her heart dropped. She started to struggle more and screamed in frustration. Her eyes glowed, the glow intensifying as she tried harder and harder to burn her way out. The shadows holding her back started to simmer and smoke. The ends of her hair flickered with flames as he grabbed her head and forced it down. She knew the moment the needle struck her skin as pure pain engulfed her whole body.
Her world then turned black.
